Delamination on DSG gear lever

Featured Replies

I didn't expect this to be so common a problem. The chrome effect is also lifting on my MkIII Octavia, which is a real pain.

Mine is a 2017 plate, so hopefully I'm still covered.

It happened to me as well. I also cut myself in that delaminated edge. A trip to the dealer and the knob has been replaced under warranty - I was still under warranty.

They did not have the piece in stock so I had to come back 2 days later. It took them approx 30 minutes to fit the new knob.

Oh, I forgot, the new piece is definitely a better design. No issues since then ( 1 year ago)

I have been to main dealers today and they want the car for two days to replace gear knob

Think they must be pulling your KNOB!:tongueout:

I'm on my third as well!

Had 1st replaced 1 year ago and the second replaced in January - both under original warranty (which has subsequently expired) and both for peeling "chrome".

Doesn't look to be anything different about this knob, so I am assuming it will be peeling again soon...

Repairs under warranty don't get warranty beyond original warranty.

You'll be lucky if you get it changed for free.

But under the sale of goods act it has to last as long as a reasonable person would expect it to last up to 6 years

except for routine service items that’s 6 years!

No, that is not how it works.

You think that everything on your car that is not a serviceable part comes with a 6yr warranty?

Good luck with that.

Sorry replaced a faulty post which I couldn’t seem to delete.

Sorry about the duplicate post (Can’t seem to delete it) I should have quoted the post I relied to as I have here.

I have had a great deal of luck with the sale of goods act or  the consumer rights act which is the newer replacement thanks. And yes it does still apply to cars.

its important to stress the test of what a reasonable person would expect on any failure. Stuff does fail occasionally and reasonably and you won’t get anywhere when it does but you would expect a piece of interior trim to be unfit for use after three years.

the dealer is entitled to part payment based on the use you have had from the part so it won’t pay the whole bill (though companies often don’t know this and pay the lot).

here is some advise from “Which” which confirms that you have rights up to six years and it does apply to new and used cars.

https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/the-second-hand-car-i-bought-has-a-problem-what-are-my-rights

Look in in the section on important time limits for making a claim on a faulty car and the last paragraph on this section on this act

As this was happening on my 2016 here in Australia, I was looking at replacing the entire gear knob but decided to look at just the DSG VRS top part of the gear knob.  I ordered it from Skoda Parts, based in the Czech Republic who were great to deal with.  The cost of the part as 14.52 Euro and shipping was 22.3 Euro, via Fed Ex.  It took 6 days from them sending it to arriving with me so very quick.  The part number for anyone who wants it is 5E0 713 146 E.  I was a little concerned at how difficult it would be to remove it but I have to say, I was wrong.  It took about 30 seconds to replace it.  Very easy - I just used a small trim removal tool, pulled in the gear knob button to expose the top (front most) surface of the gear knob 'cap' (this is the part I am replacing), this then just flicked up and off with a little more pressure,.  The replacement just hinged from the rear ward side and clipped in place.  My old one had two sections where the chrome had come off and sharp (ironically this is exactly what happened on my previous R36 gear knob).

So, for the total of 36 Euro, I now have a gear knob that does not scratch and cut my finger and looks far better.  For anyone with this issue, and out of warranty, it's very very easy to do...  Brand new one is in the bag, the other two show the chipped parts, and the box the part came in.

Does it just pops out ?

Yes - very easy, and goes flying.  The new one just pops in too
