Spare wheel clamp/ bolt

Featured Replies

So I just purchased a full size 215/45/R16 spare wheel for my Fabia Mk3. Where would I be able to get one of those clamps/bolts to screw down the wheel securely in the well? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, thanks!

Also, how do I tell if my wheels are unidirectional, whatever that means?

6Q0803899A or 1J0803899AC  £9  from your local dealer

It should say on the tyre (OUTER) on the outer side. Directional tyre will have ROTATION sign with arrow on sidewall

Thanks a ton! Are those the part numbers?

Yes, just google part numbers to see which type is yours

Sorry, how do I find out which part number would suit my Fabia MK3?

I think both of them will do the trick

You might find that the 215/45/R16 full size spare wheel will raise your boot floor up a bit.

I agree. I believe the spare wheel well is deep enough to accomdate the temporary spare but not the full size wheel.....at least, not without making the boot floor bulge to some extent. Curse of the age for lots of cars.......

I have a full size spare. It fits OK and doesn't raise the boot floor.

Well, that's two things blown out of the water.....a belief, and my confidence in my dealer's knowledge.

Thank you.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

However, when did dealers ever know what they're talking about?!

Actually, to be fair, the so called full size spare is only full size if a Fabia is fitted with 15" wheels. The  15" tyres and the 'full size' spare have the size 185/60/R15 whereas the 16" wheels fitted to your 110bhp dsg Fabia have tyres of size 215/45/R16.  So the 16" (and 18" fitted to the Monte Carlo) are 'thicker' than the 15" and may prevent the boot floor fitting correctly. Obviously, this will only happen if you have a puncture. If you really want to know then you could take a wheel off the car and see if it fits in the wheel well; or wait for a puncture!

BTW, with all these wheel/tyre combinations, including a space saver,  the final diameter remains more or less the same.

And only fits if it is on a steel wheel. I have swapped the steel for a 15'' alloy wheel the same as on the car.

It now raises the boot floor a little. See photo below of my full size 15'' spare alloy wheel in the boot well.

My full size 215/45/R16 spare fits perfectly into the well and doesn't raise the boot floor at all. Still scouting around for a clamp to secure it though.

With my set up the wheel on it's own is fine, it is when I put the took kit inside the wheel that the floor is raised up.

With your tool kit does it fit inside the wheel OK.

My 215/45/R16 alloy fits perfectly, and doesn't raise the floor. I don't use the polystyrene tool holder that came with car, instead they are in a large soft bag, which fits snugly inside the wheel. Car is 68 plate Monte Carlo 71kW or 95BHP

No, I stash my toolkit in the polystyrene foam holder on top of the floor. No space for it inside the wheel.

Yes do make sure to secure the wheel in the wheel well. I've had cars come into the pound after an accident where the spare wheel has actually killed the passenger when the car has been involved in a full frontal. In one instance, the passenger would have survived if it had been secured. After all, the spare wheel weighs a considerable amount, and it becomes a nasty projectile under some circumstances. Stopping it with your head is not recommended.

It also helps in a rear end crash.

A spare wheel full of air and bolted down in the boot will absorb a lot of impact force.

Thanks very much for this information! I was able to order a perfect fitting clamp on ebay!
