Engine cover 1.4 16v 2003

Featured Replies

I've had a look at other posts here that mention the engine cover.

'Grasp firmly and lift off' seems to be the myth peddled by most owners.

I'm not sure that mine is removable short of using a length of 4 x 2 to lever it off.

You can see that the opening for the oil fill cap and the cap don't line up, is this a case similar to  'cross-threading' of bolts and that some measure of brute force is called for ?

What will I break ?

Is it the right cover for the model ?

The identifying trim is missing from this cover what should it look like ?

I've only had the car a couple of weeks and am in the process of getting to know it.

The heater fan speed problem was sorted easily with help from this forum, I'm hoping for the same here.

The oil filler doesnt line as as its missing the filler neck.

Should have one of these on it.

And the covers just pull up with a tug.

Thanks, that explains the misalignment,

I'm assuming that the cover 'plugs onto' the fittings circled.

Yes, but there's a fourth one which completes the square pattern, in that image it has the mating grommet from the cover stuck to it, just by the intake runner for pot 1. It also slots onto the throttle body.

Pull from the rear edge first as you can brace against the scuttle panel a little with your thumbs, I find.  If that doesn't work, maybe try just pulling up on one corner, suggest TB corner. Once you get it off, a dab of silicone grease on each of the pegs will make it far easier next time.

Underside of cover looks like this:

Thank you,

'Pulling until you fear something will break' seems to work. with one corner popped off the rest are easy. The same grommet was left on  just as shown in your photo.

It was reassuring to see nice clean engine oil when I got to open the cap..

I'll see if I can find the missing bit(s) when I visit the scrapyard.

Here are the part numbers....

Thank you

I see that the pipe costs £20 plus new, I'll suffer pulling the cover off to top up, I'm sure that it won't need oil very often.

A dangerous thing to say with a 1.4 16v

Interestingly I’ve been told by the garage that there’s something wrong with my engine cover, and some part on the oil dip stick missing.

will have to get a photo tomorrow

My last car was a Fiat 1.6 16V, that used about three litres of oil in the four years and 45,000 miles over that put in during a couple of oil changes.

I'm not used to seeing much movement on the dipstick level.

I only mentioned oil consumption because some VW 1.4 16v engines do use oil,so worth keeping a check on oil level !

Indeed!

These oil separators can end up passing too much oil into the inlet manifold.

@Wench - Some VAG engines, like the 1.9D family, pass the dipstick down the oil filler through the cap, so if you're missing the extension pipe (QV upthread) you will never get a true reading because the dipstick will go too far down into the sump.

Looking at the picture, from right to left, which contains spark plug coils; how do you get the oil filler cap out of the way to get spark plugs 3 & 4 out? I have tried but failed miserably; any suggestions would be much appreciated - thank you!

Isn't it a bayonet fitting same as the cap, so twist anticlockwise to remove filler neck?
