Timing/ Cam belt replacement - engine mount removal necessary?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've got a '15 superb with the CFFB engine (2lt diesel, 140BHP) due a cam/ timing belt change. Quoted €430 by a garage (in Dublin) & parts if I do it myself looking around €250.

However I'm not sure if it's necessary to remove the engine mount, can someone shed any light? Also how about the front bumper? If it is I won't bother myself, I'll let the garage do it.

Many thanks,

Leo

Short answer is yes, the engine support needs to be removed to remove the timing belt.

The other really important thing here is that there are a number of special tools needed in order to do the job properly. If they are not used, there's a high risk of permanent engine damage. If you are going to do it yourself, it would be wise to buy the repair manual from Erwin (https://erwin.skoda-auto.cz/), and then buy the tools needed. You probably won't be far short of €430 by the time you have the equipment and manuals needed to do the job properly.

Taking a look on https://www.skodaservice.ie/, the current price here for a timing belt replacement at the dealer is €375.50 but that doesn't include replacement of the waterpump and coolant.

Many thanks for the quick answer.

I had thought that if all the tools were required it wouldn't be worth it, especially if I'm only going to use them once or twice..

Price from garage include the pump, coolant etc so I suppose it's not bad.

Thanks again,

I checked what would be covered for my car on the €375 deal and the website said "ŠKODA advise as a guide having your timing belt replaced within 5 years of driving. As part of the pricing we include Timing tension pullies, a new water pump and coolant" - but it did note that on "some" models the coolant and water pump might not be included.

The dealer confirmed the full lot would be included on my car  (I asked out of curiosity when collecting it after its service, as it will be 5 years old at its next one). That said, this confirmation was for a 1.6d 105 and not the 2.0d, 140 version.

Probably worth checking with a Dublin dealer?

I thought about doing it myself but it's too much aggravation  , your local  garage will have the correct tools and will give you a guarantee as well just in case it goes pop after a few miles. It'll probably take me a weekend to do whereas garage takes about 4 hours
