Heated windscreen on L&K Superb

Featured Replies

I have had my (Skoda Superb Mk3 L&K 2018) with the metallic heated windscreen and have managed to scratch the inside of screen with my watch while cleaning the dash.

My question is has anyone else found the inside of their screen easily scratched, I believe that the metallic layer is actually on the surface of the glass and this is what's actually got scratched, perhaps someone can confirm, if this is the case then I think it is a bad design..  If anyone has any ideas how I could perhaps remove the scratches it would be greatly appreciated.

I would be afraid to try and remove the scratches for fear of making it worse, how bad are the scratches?

Thanks, I'm sure that the inside of the screen has the metallic heated layer on the inside surface, and scratched so easily

just wait another two years and your windscreen will be ready for replace,
huge count of small dots after 30 months :(
looks worse than my previous Audi 100; Hyundai Sonata after their 16; 7 years

Why would the warranty cover damage from a 3rd party object?

You are right it was entirely my fault but I also wouldn't expect the inside of screen to scratch so easily, I feel sure that this heated metallic layer is on the inside surface of the screen and that's what's got scratched..  When I phoned Skoda main dealer they said it was new technology and you don't see the heating lines as you do on Fords.. Just wish they had told me it could be easily damaged.

Robbo, I was referring to MartiniB, obviously a cracked screen from a 3 year old car cannot be covered neither would what appears to be ‘gritting’ damage thrown up from gritters or other road users.

I haven't personally noticed my screen to be particularly soft and prone to scratches, but it is no doubt no different to yours?

Thanks Gizmo, If its the L&K you have just be careful when cleaning the dash.. Best take your watch off ;)

Thanks that's made me feel better :-(

I can't imagine it would have the coating on the outside of the glass, that would be silly.

It will surely be laminated in between the glass.

Here you go

Hello VFRVRS,    I believe it is on the inside of the screen, and I would also have thought that it would have been between the layers of glass,, but still need that confirmed.

I scratched the inside of glass while cleaning the dash, think I will take my watch off in future.

asked for warranty claim cause i don't remember for catching a stone,
but i can't also prove it is because car's body isn't enough strong.
thankful insurance covers most part of bill

If the body wasn’t stiff enough then they would all be cracking and within a couple of weeks or months, not years.

You are clearly not happy with your car, but you can’t blame Škoda for ALL of your issues.

Cracks starting from the edge of a windscreen with no evidence of stone damage are usually due to incorrect installation or faulty windscreens.

Might be worth a call to a specialist detailer? I know some have used 00(?) grade wire wool with success, but that would be way beyond my comfort zone for DIY. If you do get it done, I'd be interested in an update afterwards as to how it turns out. Thanks.

FWIW I do think the heated screen on my L&K is softer than the unheated one on my previous Mk2 (more "road rash" scratches) but the only chip that has needed repair would have chipped any screen I reckon. I saw the stone as the car in the adjacent lane spit it out and it came at me like a bullet - I'm surprised the screen survived to be honest.

Rear heated screens have always been an element printed on the inside  easily broken by lack of care, I have somewhere a tiny touch up bottle of conductive paint which must be close to 40 years old!!!

The only car I have had with a heated screen was a late 80's Sierra XR4x4 and I think the heating elements on that were within the laminate sandwich, they were very visible though, its something that I have always missed since then but the defrost on the Climatronic is so good that I'm happy to live without it.

I dont know for sure but pretty certain that the heating element is within the lamination layers.

The old tried an tested method of removing minor scratches in glass was either a light rub with Brasso (other metal polishes are available) or old fashioned toothpaste (the gritty stuff).

It is also surprisingly easy to scratch glass. Are you sure it was the watch and not some dust or other contamination? What on the watch do you think scratched the surface?

Hi Briskodajeff        I did have a glass specialist come out to me but was unable to do anything due to the angle of the windscreen from inside, this stopped him using a buffer and polisher.   Just putting up with it at the moment as it doesn't look to bad in the day time, its mainly of a night with oncoming traffic with their lights on.

Hi, I have tried using a bit of T-Cut as recommended by my Skoda dealer but they said if that doesn't work then its a new windscreen.. not tried metal polish so may give that a go. will let you know how I get on..    Thanks

Modern glass seems more susceptible to scratching.

I'm also pretty sure the heating film is inside the glass.
