Light Assistant Assistance Appreciated

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Just taken delivery of 1.9TDi Elegance Estate. Not sure if Light Assisiant thingummy is behaving as it should. With switch in position "0" side & dipped beam on all the time, no dash, switch or radio lights etc. lit. I suppose its sort of "daylight lighting", a la Scandinavia. I would have thought 0 was all lights off for UK. As it is I'm unable to have no lights on with engine running. Is this normal?

Seajay

"0" on mine is all lights off, the Tunnel Symbol is Light Assist on, then the normal side and full light switch positions.

Hi Steve'

Thanks mate, thats what I thought it should be, I'll refer it back to the dealer,

Cheers Seajay

You will find that Light Assistant has a unique view of daylight! Mine has been back to the dealer to "correct" but it still is vague at best. Basically it works fine on bright overcast days but bright sunshine fools it and the lights tend to stay on. I think it is something to do with shadows and the variance between sun and shade that fools the system into thinking its night. Personally I think it is set up to be too sensitive to changes in light, for example as soon as I drive into my garage the lights come on when, I believe, there should be an inbuilt delay to avoid the quick switching. I hade several cars in the USA with Light Assist and those worked fine - but all had a longer (15-20 second) delay before the lights came on or went off due to light changes. This meant that occasionally going into tunnels I needed to switch them on manually - but that was once in a blue moon. Now with the Skoda I find myself having to over-ride Light Assist quite frequently.

Hi Expatman,

Roger that, thanks, maybe I'll find to the same thing with mine, if I'm ever able to drive without any lights!

Skoda Techies know there is a problem. When I took my car in for the dealer to examine the Light Assist the mechanic was on the phone to Skoda Techies while they gave him instructions on things to try. After that effort (2 hours!!) it is better but still far too sensitive and useless in bright sunlight. They now want me to take it in again so they can have another go.

That will have to wait till first service.

If you lights are on in position 0 then its still coded for daytime lighting.

Your dealer can recode this so it functions normally.

The lights are coded correctly i.e. Position 0 is off, the position with the Light Assist motif is where the eccentric behaviour happens. That is where you want to be able to leave the light switch permanently without ever having to touch it.

Mine is coded to have Dips on when in 0 position. The only thing is that at night the lights will be on but dash lights won't.

Seajay,

It sounds as if it is nothing to do with the Light Assistant, but that your car has not been set to default to UK lighting norms, but has had itls lighting settings left on the Czech settings with permanent daylight running lights, but no interior (dash) lights. This can be reset by your dealer via the CAN-bus very easily at no cost to you: you just need to tell him what the problem is, and that it should have been set properly prior to delivery! Unfortunately, mentioning the Light Assistant will only confuse the issue.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Thanks for your advice folks, whistled it back to Mitchells today - 30 minutes and two decent cups of coffee later and it all works as it should. Didn't explain how it was missed on the PDI though!

Thanks again

Mine is coded for the lights to be on all the time and when I took it in for a brake light switch fault they coded them off so I had to tell them to put it back on as I prefer it that way.

Guys,

If the car is set-up for having Dips on at position 0 then DOES your car beep if you have light switch fully turned and door open ?

I'm sure I seen something about this on here but can't find the bloody post.

I nearly got caught out by it yesterday, it was bright out but decided to turn lights on fully to get dash to illuminate, but forgot to turn it off getting out of the car. Is this a glitch with having the daytime lighting switched on.

Don't know if it beeped at fully turned when it was coded for dips at 0 cos I never used it, but it certainly doesn't beep now, though it does beep if left at sidelight position-strange. It does seem to behave oddly, if turned from fully on to sidelight position with engine off, the dips remain on (and it beeps with door open) does seem to be bugged.

Furthermore, if turned fully on with all fogs on, only the front fogs go off when the engine is switched off, in this position it lets me open door and get out without any beeps-something to watch out for in sh** weather! This thing makes my head hurt!

Now here's an interesting one. Got the auto dimming mirror/rain sensor/light assistant option on my vrs...but my light assistant is missing. ie no tunnel symbol on the light switch. Question is, can the dealer fix this and swap the switch over or have I paid for an option and have no chance of getting it (only just realised so will be calling dealer in the morning).

I think you have to have the rain sensor for the light assistant to work so at least you have the most important bit of the system already on the car. Maybe it is simply a case of fitting the right switch. Whether some recoding is necessary is beyond me.

TBH the light assistant sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

Mine lights on park and opening the car on 0. I agree the sensor seems to be easily affected by shadows, and turn the lights on, and takes and age to turn off again (up to 2 mins I've noticed so far).

Maybe they have a deal with the bulb manufacturers?

Especially lucrative when it comes to xenons, frequent re-striking of the arc is what wears them out quickly.

So how about flashing (headlights, not your privates!)?

The Skoda brochure says the Xenons are used in conjunction with Halogen for main beam, so if I flash someone will it just be the Halogen that come on, or the Xenons as well?

I presume if the Xenons blow it is not a warranty item, more wear and tear? What is the costs of a Xenon bulb then and can we replace them or is it a dealer visit?

I think the flash only uses the Halogen, so you will not be wearing out the Xenons.

As for the bulb cost, I don't know.

Yep, flashing the main beam only uses the halogen lamp, main beam uses xenon and halogen lamps together.

Yes frequent restrikes of xenon lamps (especially when cold) will shorten their life but not to the point where it becomes an immediate problem, even if they go pop inside the warranty period they won't be replaced by Skoda as they are consumable items.
