Low coolant level warning

Featured Replies

In the morning, I got a warning for low coolant level. 8000km, 2.0 TDI. Never checked it.

The dealer told me that it's normal to complete with coolant two times. If it happens more times, it's a subject for a service visit.

I will fill it, tomorrow morning, with G13.

Is it normal? Did it happen to you too?

Any advices?

According to the manul, I shall refill it when the engine is cold.

My 2.0 TDI has done 3600 miles.

Came home yesterday after a 30 mile drive along B roads at 40-50 mph.

Switched off the engine and the fan continued for almost 4 minutes.

Never heard it on after engine switch off before.

Checked the coolant and it was at the bottom of the range. Topped up and was fine this evening with the fan switching off when I switched the engine off.

You may have turned off the engine during a dpf regeneration.

Either way keep a check on your coolant level.

According to the manual, the engine must be cold, for a right coolant level check.

Most probably, the fan started because you switched off the engine during a DPF regeneration, a process that generates a lot of heat.

Yes I have had exactly this issue. Low coolant level alarm at 6000 miles approx. and it was down on low line again when checked this past weekend. Topped up both times. I had already decided if this happens again, it's off to the dealer - but this confirms that. The car had not used the heating until recently, so I am prepared to believe it was a small amount of air trapped in the system when filled at the factory for the time being.

This is exactly what the dealer told me, that most probably there was air trapped in the system. It's weird, because the manual doesn't mention that.

A friend of mine, with an Octavia 1.4 TSI 150 CP, had to refill it twice..

Anyway, that friend gave me the G13 he had left from his car.

I put around 300ml. Maybe I should have put more, but it's not too late :D

Please see below the pictures from the before and after:

After 5000 km on the clock, no change of coolant level was observed  :)

1.0 DSG

Both of us who have observed this have 2.0 TDi engines. The OP mentioned that.

Not had with Skoda but did have similar years ago with Honda CRV. Dealer refilled (no charge) and advised if happened again to bring in for check - was absolutely fine. You really should not need to supply coolant unless dealer is too far away

VAG / Skoda like to add a few air pockets into their cooling systems at the factory, it's OK they don't charge extra for them.

Seriously though, it's a common observation. A couple of top-ups in the first 6 months / 5,000 miles is not cause for concern. Anything more than that might suggest a leak.

My Kodiaq (and several others) also required a couple of top-ups...

Only use genuine G13...

Sylver1011 and Grumpy Geaser, I think you are right that I should have visited the dealer to do the refill, free of charge. Next time, I'll do so. Thanks for your feedback.

I bought some anyway. No harm in having a spare litre at home, or in the boot.

Only £12 delivered to your door...

This must be a 2.0 TDI thing as my 1.6TDI holds the level, just checked this morning after 12,000 miles and still right at the top.  Does seem odd as the 2.0 cannot be that much different to the 1.6 apart from 100ml extra volume per cylinder?

I have a Karoq 1.6 tdi dsg and the temp light came on On  Monday as I drove out the garage.  Restarted 20 minutes later no lights. Same happened on Tuesday, but today it was fine no lights, but the coolant level did look below the minimum mark with the cap off when I checked it. Car has done approx 13500 Kim’s

Time to top it up then. Don't be ignoring warning lights.

Mines a 1.6tdi karoq sel diesel with 2879 miles and tonight it came on red warning. I've looked at its nearly empty too. Trip to the dealers in the morning lucky it's only 3 miles away so I'm sure it will be fine for that trip.

My 1.6tdi Karoq sel has only done 1800 miles and today when started up displayed the low coolant warning. After raising the bonnet discovered the coolant level was very low.It required over 400mls. Like everyone on here I was very surprised at this and will be monitoring the levels.

Very sorry everyone for not giving an update. Took the car to my skoda dealership for them to have a look, first they told me to busy and bring back in 4 weeks , then they told me to buy some g13 from them and top up my self, and as luck would have it the sales man that sold the car was in the show room so I called him over and asked him if the car was pdi correctly because as he well knows when he handed the car over the sat nav card was missing and still some white plastic wrapping on the car, with this the service manager over heard and took the keys straight off me and put the car into the workshop. Came back about 20 mins later and said they have checked the levels and it was in between the min and max line however they have checked the amount of coolaint and it was a good mix and have topped it up to max as a.good will. Got home had a look and see it looked weak the pink colour wad not as strong, so checked the dash camera which was wired in a way and so small behind the rear view mirror they must not have seen it, he opened the bonnet did not do any checked just chucked tap water into it and then used the same water and filled up the screen wash too, no g13 in sight.  Spoke to skoda uk who came back and said they don't advise using tab water because if the chemicals added to it, and when they got a copy of the picture I had sent to them showing levels they said there in house tech team feel this could be a leek , so skoda have booked the car into another dealership for a couple of days in March for a master tech to do full tests and to look at the issues with the rear seats wielding sticking out of the middle rear seats and as there is already a recall campaign on this,  they should be able to add this vin.to the list under warranty.  So now I'm happy and can relax again.

Which dealer did this?

I certainly wouldnt be using that dealer again. If the mexhanis is using tap water contrary to Skodas recommendations he shouldnt be working there.  How do you know it was tap water?

It was all caught on dash camera,  green garden flask over to the tap and then into the coolaint and screen wash.

Sinclair skoda in Swansea. I know a few people that have had issues. They have also refused to do softwear updates to cars now as something about they was hacked and had a virus so anything that needs updating they can't do. Work that out.

Thanks a workshop to give a miss, shocking...

Skoda UK should be informed of this. Not acceptable and dealer should be required to improve customer service or lose franchise.

Skoda UK came back and said they have spoken to them and they confirmed this , that's why I've been booked into another dealership 30 miles away. The garage said they refuse to do internet based updates now but other updates will be fine. Skoda still not impressed and I guess that's something they are looking into,
