Gearbox/Clutch problem

Featured Replies

I have some strange squeaking noises when I slip the clutch in some of the gears. I had the gearbox oil changed to no avail; so I thought I'd just live with the noise.

Today I tested some car ramps and saw this: what looks to me like some kind of gasket (I'm not very mechanically-inclined).

Does this look normal? Could this be causing the noises?

Cheers!

Appears to be item 27 here: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2006-453/1/103-103015/

"Spacer plate".

Won't be intended as a seal, because there shouldn't be anything to seal in between the gearbox and the engine block. Any oil in there is either leaking out of the engine or the gearbox into the flywheel/clutch area.  There's oil all over the sump though, so first step is to clean it all up in order to see where it reappears from.

May be nothing to do with the noise.

How long have you owned the car?

Agreed, which makes me wonder...

Is there any sign of clutch slip, or using more engine oil than the car used to?

I’ve owned the car for about 3 years now. I had the clutch/flywheel done about 20k ago. The master/slave cylinders were replaced a few months ago after failure, shortly after which I noticed the squealing noise (garage said the clutch and flywheel looked like new).

I’ve hardly had to top up the oil since I had it serviced a year ago.

At least I know what the spacer thing is now! And I will clean the sump.

Any idea why the spacer is warped?

No sign of clutch slip, as I understand. But sometimes (usually when the engine is hot after a long journey) there is a metallic squeal when I slip the clutch gently from 1st into 2nd.

They probably bent the spacer when they replaced the clutch. I wouldn't have thought it would really affect anything.

Yes, the clumsy prat who last had the gearbox off did it.

Some parts of it probably stuck to the gearbox, other parts to the block. As the gearbox was separated from the block, it stayed stuck long enough to stretch and bend bits?

Which makes me wonder if the thrust bearing was misaligned when the garage re-assembled things. Were any of the staff wearing stetsons or chaps? ;)

Are you suggesting the clutch was done by The Village People? :D

Should I leave it or pay for a “good” mechanic to sort it all?

Well, by cowboys sure.

I'm wondering if the problems have been caused by the garage who did the clutch work, and the subsequent statements were them covering up.

Possibly, it could have been the mechanic who did the clutch or the mechanic who changed the master and slave cylinder.

What do you recommend I do? Drive till it goes wrong?

I think it already has. Aside from the oil weep, a clutch should be silent in operation.

Point taken ;)
