tell me about it, very silly to me too... ignition off / on, re - installed software again just in case, which multiple menus do you mean? I have the basic and advanced menus available, plus the coding (07) menu available in the 17 module, everything looks as if it should work but the coding is not being written even though the dialogue box tells me that it has done... :-( 

 

also looked on ross tech wiki and nothing for 5J model, only newer version...

Issue found... mate who I borrowed cable and laptop from eventually said it was not an original cable, etc. The 17.1.3 version that is not from Ross tech is not compatible with the mk2 fabia 5J CAVE engine, tried the 16.8 version and it worked first time, oh well, should have researched it better and found out sooner it wasn't an original cable even though it looked the part... :-( thanks for the support guys.
