Oil pressure

Featured Replies

After much headscratching we have finally found out the 1.2 64bhp 2004 is running with 4 bar oil pressure. (Should be half that). Anyone any ideas. It's a new one on all of us

4 bar oil pressure is healthy, what's the problem and who's "us"?

 that's exactly 7 bar

Amended it for you ;)

Oil pressure varies with oil temperature and engine speed. At what engine speed (and oil temperature) do you feel that it should be half of 4 bar?

Ok . At what oil pressure  *should* the oil pressure light illuminate due to excess pressure

Never, it only indicates inadequate (too low) pressure.

If your oil pressure has been measured, and is above the minimum specification, at the appropriate measuring conditions, then your warning light probably indicates a broken wire or failed/failing pressure switch. Do you know where to find it?

thanks to everyone

ok, the measurement was done by my local garage who changed the oil pressure switch and checked everything else before diagnosing it with a proper tool. i trust their judgement as they must have seen thousands of those engines over the years and have serviced the car.

i would have to assume an oil pump fault ?

4 bar oil pressure is healthy, why aren't you listening?

Tell the garage the 1980's called for their lower oil pressure, 2 bar is much too low for modern engines, they run much tighter tolerances these days and use high pressure oil pumps.

ok, one poster mentioned the spec for the 1.4 engine. Mine is the 1.2 HTP 12v as fitted from late 2003 onwards. is there a spec for that

just checked haynes 2.0 bar 2000rpm engine oil 80C - and that is the minimum - no mention of a maximum.

Spec for the 1.2 engines is minimum 2 bar at 2000rpm and at at least 80C oil temp, maximum at higher engine speeds 6 bar.

Are you actually getting a warning light?

This is probably pointless, but, as long as you have a good oil flow, there is no such thing as "too high an oil pressure at the switch". As an aside, again subject to flow, the actual dynamic oil pressure in the main bearings at 2_000 rpm is more likely to be two hundred bar than two point zero bar.

Even in the 1960s, cars I saw with oil pressure gauges such as MGB,  Rovers or Triumphs ran at around 60-80psi normally, only dropping lower at idle/hot.

Max oil pressure is set by a simple spring loaded hydraulic pressure relief valve in the oil pump housing.
