Estate Rear Hatch Filling with Water

Featured Replies

Right - has anyone had an issue with the rear hatch of a Mk2 filling with water?

I've noticed after heavy rain the rear hatch of our '07 estate seems to fill with water between the outer and inner skins / trim panel.  This drains out through the 'bump stops' on the corner of the hatch, the lock or the drain holes when the hatch is opened and over the last day wth the heavy rain it seems to have accumulated a significant quantity.  Water also seems to pool on the rear hatch seal at bumper level but fortunately, and probably because of the slope on our driveway, is currently draining round the back of the seal where it is fitted to the bodywork and to the outside world, rather than into the spare wheel well which appears dry.

The rear washer is working fine and there is no screenwash smell to the collected water which suggests to me that the rear window bond / seal has failed, as it did on our Fabia Estate.

For the time being I've taped over the 'joins' between the glass and hatch frame with PTFE tape to see if this prevents water ingress and, if it does, will reseal the glass to the hatch with is with tigerseal but does anyone have any other suggestions to check or experiences?

Cheers

The high level 'third' brake light on the estate is often the cause.

It has a foam / rubber gasket which deteriorates over time.

Pop off the inner plastic boot trim and try a water test, with you sat in the boot and a friend hosing down the tailgate...

Cheers Silver...   I looked at that from the outside over the weekend but didn't get round to removing it to check.

It strikes me that there is too much water for it to be that but definitely worth a closer look - thanks!

Just need to find the opportunity to get the trim off now ( and work out where all the clips etc are...)

@skomaz the link below shows a parts diagram for an '07 estate tailgate - may be of some help in working out what goes where ...

Thanks - that'll be very useful this weekend (if the kids give me half a chance to sort it!)

well it's not coming in between the hatch and the glass - that's sealed with tape now but the hatch is still filling with water...

So the next stop is the high level light suggested by Silver...   fortunately the interior of the car itself is still dry..
