VRS 2.0TSI, EML comes on after driving fast

Featured Replies

Hi,

Not sure if topic has been covered but I'm new to forum so rather than trawl through posts I'll ask instead.

I bought my vrs in August from a reputable garage which I trust and it's been looked after them since brand new which is proven by stamps in log book.  My problem is I had a couple issues after buying it, on the same day I picked it up the coil pack failed which caused a smokey limp car so I took it straight back and they stuck another straight in, no problems until one day car starts coughing and spluttering down the road and it cuts out, long story short the same cylinder they changd the coil pack, the injector failed miserably and the nozzle cracked and flooded my engine.  I got it towed to the same garage and they sorted it out no problems. I mentioned to the garage that since having the car from the start the engine sounded like a big diesel and was a little noisey, apparently it's the tappets which has no effect on engine performance and all 2.0tsi engines sound like that but I don't like it and I want to rectify it, how can I do this?  Another problem which is a major concern, between 2300rpm and 3400rpm theres a rattling, not sure if it's turbo or a heat shield or whatever but it doesn't sound great, its raspy if anything, but after driving hard the fans kick in and start coming on randomly for days accompanied by the engine management light which also stays on for a couple of days after hard driving, then it goes off when driving normally.  I'm so confused can somebody give me some advice please?

You've got a lot in there.

If you want responses you need to break the issues out a bit in some separate sentences / headings and paragraphs.  Not everyone will try to wade through a block of text.

The tappets are hydraulic and self adjusting and can be a little noisey at immediate startup.  The other thing that is a tap tap tap is the evap purge solenoid or valve.  Mine has made a rapid tap tap tap every since I've had it. If you search you will find posts on it.  If it is more a thrashing rattle sound I would be concerned about your timing chain tensioner which if it has never been replaced, ideally should be.

2500-3400 RPM rattling could be any rattle / resonance issue. A bit of a wastegate rattle is a common issue, you don't have to do anything but a wastegate clip helps minimise it quite a lot. It did on my 2011 vRS.

EML you need VCDS for a full scan to see what is going on. Guesswork otherwise, it "could be" related to the inlet manifold flaps operation if related to higher rpm. But I am just throwing guesses at you without the codes.

I'd certainly be investigating whether the rattling could be timing chain related.

It can be just the direct injection - this can be noisy with the bonnet up - this is normal!!

If it's the cam chain it usually just rattles a bit on startup (oil pressure taking up the tensioner)  and the noise would be at one end of the engine.

Apologies for the long post, I've never posted before.  Thank you for your replies they are very helpful and much appreciated.  My step dad has vcds so I'm gonna make a trip to see him.  However ive been told about rtech performance in Nuneaton and they're meant to be vag doctors so I'm gonna take a trip to see them

RTech are great for tuning but it may be worth getting a local independent VAG garage to give the car the once over first.

I actually live in Nuneaton but im using another garage to fix my duff cylinder 2 injector before going RTech. They advised me to replace all four injectors at the same time as they seem to have a domino effect in failing once one goes. Managed to get four injectors for £45 each from Autodoc.co.uk, but ill wait and see what turns up.

My injector missfires and then epc comes on if you keep accelerating hard. The epc light is to warn you it has shut the cylinder off to protect the exhaust.

If you turn the ignition off and then back on it clears the epc light (i have a Ross-Tech vcds).

Thanks for advice, I know a couple trustworthy local guys that are vag experts too, just thought I'd let rtech do the lot but I suppose a proper expert will be better.  When my car broke down they had to replace one injector, coil pack and spark plug to fix the issue, my friend who is a massive car guru advised to change the rest asap but I never have, however I do have an idle misfire so I may need to lol
