Picked her up today, straight into garage for cambelt+water pump, is it certain ive got Bluetooth?

 

Theres a "phone" button by the gear lever but all it did was mute the radio

If it's just muting, you probably don't have BT.

 

A VCDS autoscan would confirm it otherwise you can check under the front seats for the BT module.

Like langers2k says, if it is just muting and it is a "Bolero" - I'd say no BT for sure.

 I recall my mk M2 FL had the BT under the drivers seat but read prior to that it was a plugin behind the audio head/unit?

You have a nice high spec L&K though and I'm assuming a Columbus, so the BT is always under the drivers seat (it is on my 2014 FL too). 

 

I'm pretty sure there was a post here (maybe the Octavia forum) that said some Boleros had it built in (factory order option) and some others, if they had the right pins, could have a module connected at the back of the unit....

I've never come across anything like that for the Bolero.

 

There are some Amundsen+ (RNS-315) headunits with BT built in but turned off from factory. They just need to have BT turned on using VCDS and a microphone added.

I don't don't doubt you're right on this.

 

I probably confused  someone talking about the connection pins needed at the back in order to connect an under seat bluetooth module.

 

There is this post from our Superb MK 2 forum about retrofitting a factory option bluetooth to the Bolero (its an "under seat" one) :  Thread on which is the factory kit option for bluetooth on a Superb 2 Bolero

Maybe the BT has never been setup, maybe the last (private owner) was a phone+headset man?

 

MFD>settings>blutooth>phone i believe?

so, without spending £250 on a Skoda BT kit how do i get handsfree into the system, a FM reciever? 

I have a Bolero with BT for phone, but not BT streaming. Can you not find a wrecker and get the required module to plugin? Good luck!

Depends which phone you use, this module will only work with SOME android devices as it's the Premium HT-2 version and only on maxidot display, it's not compatible with iPhones - you need a module that offer HFP to ensure full compatibility, i.e. Premium HT-4 or any Standard/High depending if you want A2DP for streaming - this list give a good breakdown:
