1.0 TSI - burning smell/heats up fast

Featured Replies

Since picking my 1.0 TSI I've experienced a burning smell and have noticed what must be the electric water pump still going when I turn the engine off.

Dealership has said it's probably just some contamination during assembly getting hot and burning off.

I can't physically see anything and someone has suggested the GPF?

Anyone with the same engine noticed anything similar?

My Octavia has some sort of buzzing noise after the engine is turned off. Occasionally I get the burning smell when the DPF is in operation. I am sure someone else when enlighten your concerns.

... there's a webasto aux heater installed on mine which automatically runs. I'd check the menus in the car setup to see if something similar is installed on yours....and the GPF may well be doing something.

A Webasto equipped car in Whickam would be a unique thing.

OP says that they have a TSI - so it won't be a DPF run. My understanding is that the Wabasto auxiliary heater is only available as an option in Scandinavian countries.

This. :)

im not 100% certain but its either contamination on the engine/exhaust or possibly a GPF filter.

still not sure of the engine temp needle shooting up to 90 within less than a mile of easy driving is expected on these engines but got me worried lol.

Tsi engines are fitted with water cooled turbos, there is an secondary electric water pump that runs on for 1 or more minutes on shutdown. If you pop the bonnet, you will often see the expansion tank coolant moving about from the returning flow.

Weird my 1.4 didn't do it though?

Good to know either way :)

Depend on the age - MY19 versions now have an OPF ("Ottopartikelfilter" -petrol version of a DPF). You don't get active regens though - just passive as petrol burns hotter.

@gRoberts  1.4 TSI / TFSI Euro 5 & Euro 6 did it when required.  Maybe you were just not so aware of it.

Quite possible, but I'm awfully tuned to stuff like this so would've heard it :(

So long as it's expected and isn't getting worse, I'm good lol

My 1.5tsi heats up within a mile or so. Really quick. It's designed that way, coolant jacket around the exhaust manifold I believe.

As others have said, buzzing after you stop the engine is an auxiliary water pump to keep the coolant circulating.

Wouldn't surprise me if the 1.0 is the same. The quicker you can get the car up to operating temperature the quicker you can switch to closed loop emissions control.

I thought as much. Just a little disconcerting when you're used to things taking a few miles to heat up to 10+ on diesels lol
