vRS 245 knocking sound - help!

Featured Replies

My VRS 245 DSG hatch is making an intermittent 'rattle' which sounds more like something mechanical wobbling - almost like the exhaust making slight burbles/pops. It appears to be coming from the rear nearside somewhere and can last for a few seconds at a time.

I know the sound unfortunately isn't a fruity exhaust but it's disconcerting as it sounds like something is loose or broken. The sound appears intermittently at low revs at low speed - usually I think when the car is cold but I'm not 100% sure about that from memory.

Anyone else experienced similar or have any ideas what it might be?

First thought was have a read of this....

Is anything obvious from a visual inspection; exhaust heat shield or similar?

Take it to a dealer and try and get some video evidence too.   If you're within the first 6.5K miles (I think that's the limit?) then you're in the snagging/warranty period wherein the dealer has to investigate/fix and can't use a 'fair wear and tear' response.

Unfortunately, intermittent vibrations/rattles are a PITA to diagnose as you have to have them occur whilst the dealer has the car.  I reported one within the first 2k miles on my Superb and it's never occurred whilst the dealer has had the car but because I provided video 'evidence' of the vibration the dealer has committed to fix the problem despite me being outside the initial snagging period.  I just need to take it in to them whilst the fault is occurring (which is usually after a 3hr drive home, at night, when they are closed )

Nothing obvious from a quick visual inspection but I'm no mechanic and so it's tricky to know what I'm even looking for! It's a really odd sound - not unpleasant like a grating or rattling, it's more like a 'wobbling' or 'bubbling' mechanical sound that lasts for a few seconds on low throttle inputs occasionally. I reckon it might be something to do with the exhaust. Perhaps something is loose and it's resonating at a certain frequency of revs.

Car was new in Feb and only on about 3K miles.

my car developed a hollow knocking sound from front nearside suspension area that rapidly became worse over the course of a few short trips. i was convinced it was a dying shock absorber (google "mark 7 golf faulty damper") but it turns out the suspension droplink has snapped. thankfully it hasn't snagged anything important and a new pair is relatively inexpensive.

i wonder if you have the golf mk7 shock issue....?

Just found this video (thanks to Google) which shows someone replicating the exact same sound I'm hearing from my car. You need to listen with volume up to be able to hear it properly. It's clearest right near the end of the video after about 1 minute.

Still none the wiser to what causes the issue though!

Once had an exhaust clamp snap on a Vauxhall which sounded awful as the revs vibrated the whole system only getting quieter at a cruise. Nothing obvious like a rear spring snapped going over a speed bump, that happened to my Dad and he said it made a bad noise.
