Autocar vRS Test

Featured Replies

good review, I like it and would consider one if/when I need to upsize.

But down from 5 stars for the Octy 1 to 4 for the Octy 2....

Interesting figures those, on Rich1068's hour long test drive we put the new RS thru the local performance test (accelerate from rest out of a T junction and clock the speeds when passing over 2 man hole covers). It was near as damn it the same as my 4x4. :D

6.6s to 60 is a bit optomistic! Thats faster than the GTi which is 7.2 and the official Skoda figure or 7.3s (I believe). In fact is only a few hundreths of the pace of the new R32, which I doubt.

I'm not slagging it off as I think its a superb car, and offers a hell of a lot, and if a diesel vRS does come along soon I may very well be tempted!!

you have to remember that the magazines use GPS equipment and do two runs to negate wind assistance.

its not the first time a manufacturer is pessamistic with their times. i believe subaru quoted roughly 6 seconds 0-62 with the late '90's impreza, but the magazines got that to 5.5 for the standard 2000 turbo.

i got some blurb from the dealer last year when i was looking at a fabia vRS, and they (autocar) had one as a long term test, they clocked theirs in 7.5-ish seconds 0-62. skoda quote 9.5 to 62mph.

as far as i am aware, the car had a standard engine, though i do remember they made a point of describing the conditions (a cold, dry february morning) which we all know is perfect for turbos.

got to bear in mind that some engines dont give their best performance until fully run in, might have been a tight engine.

then again, my progression through cars has not been great or particularly powerful (mums 1.4 polo, my 1.8 zetec focus), so the jump to the vRS was fast enough for me!!

Was this not auto express, who had a remap done?

Have to say I find the 0-60 very optimistic. I recall very well the first ever Mk 1 VRS test by Autocar (16/05/01). At the time it was raving about how quick it was (clocked 0-60 in 6.7s, the same as a BMW 330Ci!) I remember thinking "this is definitely the car for me...

It was only over the next few issues that Autocar itself started doubting how genuine their test car had been - and whether Skoda had been tempted to slot in the TT's 225 engine or at least do some fettling.

I don't doubt Autocar's figures - but I do suspect that Skoda provided the magazine with a "well prepared" car!

Nope, I believe it was Autocar in a standard Furby, as for the new Ocy vRS, have driven the same car two times now, 1st with 1500km on, and was not that impressed compared to my Mk1, then drove it again with about 5500Km on it, WOW, could not believe it was the same car:eek:

It's been well documented that Skoda supplied a chipped vehicle for the original Autocar test. As soon as I read the review and noted the 0-60 time, I suspected that they'd done it again. The cheeky scamps.

I have to say that after having my estate for a week now, irrespective of the test data (Autocar are known for being very accurate) I feel that the Autocar test is the most well rounded of all reviews I've read.

Basically as a Hot Hatch the vRS does not compete at all with the Golf Gti or the Focus ST. It is too soft and the steering lacks that last 5% of feel. It is however a mighty mighty fine car and for what I want from a car at the moment there really is nothing else that comes close for the price. Pace and space never felt so light on the pocket....

(By the way I got 27mpg towing 1250kg. This is pretty impressive as an Accord CDTi only managed 30mpg towing the same setup)

so it was this one then

with a superchip? anyway not the point!

I still await my test drive of the vrs. I won't buy one, don't like the interior, I will go for a remap for my TDi once I have the time and price, hopefully (get a group buy) be right.

I am glad though that the vrs is getting more better reviews than bad:)
