Front seat belt possible fault

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have recently bought a yeti ‘13’ plate Greenline. The last few days the passengers front seat belt has been difficult to use and would jam straight away. This morning the drivers side did the same and took around 20 minutes of persistence to sort. It is a cat D, I wonder if the pretentioners need replacing?

has anyone had any experience with this?

many thanks!

Cat N is perhaps the least damaged but if trouble with both seat belts I would be worried about it and prepare to buy new or good second hand parts.
Who did the repair to make it roadworthy and who did the engineers safety report.

It could just be "one of those things", but on a damaged repairable I'd expect absolutely the driver's , and probably the front passenger's belt to be replaced as a matter of course. With rear belts, I'd only replace them if they were in use at the time.

Hi, thanks for the reply. It was was written off in 2013 shortly after it was first registered. Unfortunately it came with no report. I was planning to take it to Skoda and have it looked at. No warning lights on the dash but I wonder if there is a lingering fault code that could be effecting the pretentioners.

Love the car though!

My understanding is that the pre-tensioners are on the buckle end of the belts, under the seats, and yes these should have been replaced if they have been "activated" or if the air bags have gone off.
It is possible that the internal springs in the reels may also have been damaged. Consensus in the trade has always been that in any accident the seat belts that were occupied should be replaced.

Well, that was normal practice from before pre-tensioners were even invented, replacing belts and buckle units.

I've just replaced the 40+ year old ones in my Midget. God knows what they have coped with.
