Golf R32

Featured Replies

Took one out for a blat this week and absolutely love it..... The looks, poise, handling which aint too bad but the thing for me was the noise!! OOooeeerrr......

I'm now seriously thinking about selling the Octavia - again and getting myself one. You only live once and all that :)

Will find out for myself as I've booked a test drive in one as soon as the dealer gets one.

Do it, you'll never regret it, especially when you get that tingle down your spine every time you listen to the engine!!

which one? mk4 or mk5?

MK5 is sold out until next year. However Ventura VW in tamworth have their demo car I'm sure they'd be persuaded to sell if required.

everytime i see them i want one, just wish they were a bit quicker.

i so want a v6 or v8

hows the other golf going mate?

Yup I've taken one of these babies out, love it, absolutely loved it.

Wont even bother getting an insurance quote for one lol

Try one with a HGP Twin Turbo Kit Fitted:thumbup: :D

The Phrase " My My that is rapid" springs to mind

They are a nice car & the sound alone does it for me, but they are very expensive to run.

A mate had a Mk4 R32 from new, but sold it within 8 months 'cos it was costing a small fortune to keep on the road.

Don't want to put you off, but bear that in mind.

Mk IVs are coming down a bit in price too, although I've noticed that the Konig seats look very worn and tatty on all the ones I've seen.

It was a mk4 one. Re: running costs. Insurance is about the same as the Octy, I can get tyres quite cheaply from a friend in the trade, long life servicing is available and maybe my local Skoda dealer would service it and here's the but. I don't have a cheap fuel supply available just yet and that's the only thing that is putting me off atm.....

kenny, mk2 is doing great thanks. Just need some nice weather to get it polished up and start using it :)

I think that's down to how owners look after the seats. Have had mine quite some time and they still look mint and you can smell the leather everytime you get in.

I must admit that was the other thing the Konigs are lush!!!

What's an R32 like to drive when you're not caning it then?

Obviously flat out it's going to be quick, but what about when you're taking it easy?

My experience from previous ownership of VW VR6s is that they're a little flat unless you really use the gears, and I've read road tests that say the ride is very harsh, but then on uk-mkivs some of the guys absulutely love them then there's some don't keep them for very long.

I've never taken one out as I'm a little worried that I'd be a bit disappointed, and would have to change my R32 wallpaper on my computer that's been there for a couple of years now......:D

It seemed ok at more 'normal' speeds / driving. I'd agree the ride was alot firmer than what I'm used to but can't really comment on what the overall implications are of that i.e. is it more difficult to live with on longer journeys etc.

I don't really understand the 'little flat' statement. To me it was very diesel'like to drive i.e. mountains of torque which makes for effortless overtaking / get aways etc but you're not having to change gear at 4.5k revs and can hang onto each gear change for longer.

I think they're a car that you would buy and either love or hate hence why they may have a few owners etc. I'm really tempted but as said above some of the horror stories re: fuel consumption are a put off. If only I could borrow one for a weekend :)

Jimmy, if you've ever driven a mk3 Golf VR6 you will know what I mean about a little flat! They don't exactly lack torque at low revs but they don't feel very responsive until about 3500 rpm. Hence my worry that despite the extra displacement the VR6 in the R32 might need revving fairly hard to make rapd progress. I'm afraid after about six years or maybe a bit more with remapped TDIs and 1,8t's I'm used to plenty of midrange urge. Not a critisism of V6s here, just wondering what the R32 was like for day to day driving as not all my driving involves going flat out!

On paper I would be the ideal R32 owner, I cover a low annual mileage, I'm old enough to afford the insurance plus I am a long standing VAG owner; One small fly in the ointment is that I can't really afford/justify second mortgage for one :)

Hence why I've never driven one, don't want to risk being disappointed and don't want to fall in love with one either......

Andy, I've never driven a vR6 tbh so will have to take your word on it. I never really noticed on the test drive but would take another one out before committing. I'll bear it in mind though :)

Like yourself I also feel i would be an ideal owner apart from the fact I do about 20k miles pa (mainly business). I'm hoping to persuade the wife to get a Focus diesel or similar though so I can use that on such occassions :)

I driven a VR6 & it needs to be revved to get the best out of it.

But the R32 is a different engine with bigger capacity.

Well, if you're used to a 1.8t and wasn't disappointed by the 3.2 then it can't be all bad.

Main difference between the old VR6 and the newer 'V6' is the induction side of it, which includes the 4 valve head and variable inlet manifolding. I've owned two Golf VR6 mk3s and went to buy a V6 MK4 but came away with a standard GTI as the V6 didn't seem any better, and the GTI had so much easy tuning potential. Glad they've sorted it with the 3.2, extra lungs never did any harm to anyone.

One day when I've saved up some pennies I'm just going to have to have a go in one :)

As said the R32 engine is not the same as the VR6 engine, infact it's totaly different and hand built, It also comes as new pre-run in on the bench by the company that hand builds them for VW, I think they are called Otto, there is a stamp in the engine somewhere with their name on.

Fuel Economy isn't an issue if your not thrashing it everywhere you go, unfortunately these type of cars attract people who do thrash them everywhere they go, then moan that the fuel economy isn't any good!

No car has good Economy if it's being thrashed everywhere, my mate bought his from new some 2 years ago now, and wouldn't be parted with it for anything, and I can see why!

On paper the performance figures aren't earth shattering granted, but I assure you, when driven in anger they are very fast, they also feel so well planted, and inspire confidence, every time I borrow it I dont want to give it back, and while some may say 'it's just a Golf' believe me, the amount of admiring looks you get when driving it around (especialy in that stunning blue) prove it really isn't 'just a Golf'
