Battery replacement / coding

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just out of interest, does a replacement Bosch (Non OEM) battery in my Octavia have to be coded in with VAGCom after fitting?

I've seen mention of it via Google, and also from a techy friend who says that VW systems need resetting otherwise the new, replacement battery isn't fully recognised etc

Scenario (as from my previous posts), a brand new Bosch S4 battery had to be replaced under warranty, and within a couple of months (literally) the replacement is showing similar symptoms :(

It does if you have stop/start as I found out today on our Leon 1.2 TSI 2014. VW Group assist did it with a laptop. Halfrauds said they couldn’t do it when I asked before AA/VW came out as it had a negative terminal chip.

No, it doesn't  have Start / Stop technology ..

I just checked your profile and a 1.9 2007 Octy. Do what I did. ABS batteries eBay, type 096/100 which is the largest you can fit in the tray. Calcium with a long warranty. Delivered next day. About £45 at that time. Think more now. A snug fit but it does go in and jacket still fits. There are loads of writeups in here. Or some like Tanya Batteries for Varta or Bosch types.

I fitted a new battery a couple of months ago on my Octavia. It then did as expected, kept a couple of warning lights on when I started the engine, but they went off within 5 mtrs of moving away, they reset themselves. The windows need resetting though, so that they go up and down with one flick of the switch. Done in 30secs if you know the simple way how. Good as gold ever since.

If you haven't got stop/start then there shouldn't be battery monitoring fitted so there is no need to recode. Assuming you have access to VCDS or similar, there should be no "Address 61: Battery Regul" listed...

As you're having the same problems again, it suggests there something taking out the battery rather than the battery failing :/

Right, a quick update ...

Decided to scan with Carista earlier this afternoon, and picked up no fewer than 28 electrical trouble codes (kinda ironic when I'm having major battery drain issues). Anyway, I cleared them all, and took the car out for a decent spin ..

Some 3hrs later I scanned again, and they hadn't returned. I'm guessing they were all historic from when the original OEM battery was replaced by me a good few months ago, and never cleared.

I've seen a couple of posts elsewhere in the web, stating that these un-cleared fault codes have been known (especially in VW vehicles) to confuse the CANBus systems to an extent that battery drain is present until they've been cleared, regardless of the condition of the battery and alternator.

Well, here's hoping, fingers crossed it's that simple eh
