Juddering clutch

Featured Replies

The clutch on my 2002 Furby TDi (40k miles) is juddering a little when I release it very slowly (I noticed it today reversing onto the drive very slowly). Does this mean that it's wearing out or that there's anything else wrong with it?

I was always under the impression that a clutch is only worn out when it slips . . . . but maybe that isn't the case?

I wouldn't have thought that it'd be knackered already, only had the car for the last 10k, before that it had a super-careful OAP owner.

Help much appreciated!

If your car din't do this before, you may have a problem, which you'll need to sort out at a dealer's...however, otherwise , I would suggest you balance the release between the clutch and accelerator pedal, because all clamp and no gas = judder :)

'Might' be an issue with the dual mass flywheel.

Get it looked at.

Sounds like dual mass...mine is doing similar but to a magnitude far greater...heck the sarnie van man can here it when I pull off...or is that driveshaft wobble?

I'd actually argue and say the OAP is the potentially worse clutch user. My Gran (RIP) used to really give the car a few to many revs before dumping the clutch, good job it was a bx1400 as anything more we'd of been in the hedge beofre the next step of straightening up the wheel was applied.

50k is a bit early for it to be going...although mine went at 60k on the dot give or take 4k or nursing then 2k of abuse.

As I understand the dual mass it the fingers or the springs on the fingers that are the problem, problem however is it's mechanical and ALL mechanical things stop eventually or prematurely...ROSS help, how does a dual mass work :)

Rob, does it wail at all in first?

Thanks for the replies all.

Colin, no it doesn't wail in first. It's actually only caused by VERY gentle clutch release (e.g., when trying to pull out of muddy ground or snow) and isn't really a problem in normal use.

probably how you drive:rofl: , i saw you at the last cat and fiddle meet, and you knocked my dad sick with your driving, lol. actually, its cos he is a crap passenger, but i say its your driving!!!

lol..... made a reputation for yourself yashimacat!

Have had a juddering clutch on the 'other car' (Polo TDiPD 1.4) for 2 years/20,000 miles at least. Really bad at times and sometimes makes the rear silencer bang around a bit when reversing. As far as I know it's not a wear issue, just some kind of failure, don't know what though??
