NEW YEAR RATTLE

Featured Replies

It sounds like it's from the front of the car when going over bumps at less than 30mph (2004 Mk 1, 1.2, HTP). Bouncing on the bonnet does not bring it on. I've jacked up the 4 wheels in turn and can't detect any play in the usual suspects (drop links, ARB bushes, tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearings, bushes etc.). I can't feel any play in the exhaust and heat shields.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (of course, my method of checking for play could be suspect as I'm not as expert as many of you are).

Thanks for all your help over the year. Happy New Year to you brilliant forumites.

It's quite hard to detect play in the drop links when they are in situ. It could be those as it's very common.

I too have an annoying clunk type noise as well. The Garage reckons it could be anti-roll bar linkages BUT I've had intermittent clunks for about 2 years now. Even though this particular clunk is more frequent and prominent than the previous ones, is it possible that it has always been the drop links that have just started getting worse? Also I should mention once I've driven for say 5 miles, it no longer clunks.

Apologies to the op for the threadjack but didn't want to keep starting new ones and this is along the lines of my issue.

Also happy new year everybody :)

^ Bit puzzled as to why the noise would stop after driving about five miles but it's worth changing the drop links to rule them out as they are a very common cause of knocking. I can highly recommend Meyle HD drop links - much better quality than even genuine Skoda ones. Meyle part number 116 060 0000/HD

Thankyou TMB, I too am a bit puzzled as to why the noise comes and goes but hopefully replacing the drop links will cure it. I will be sure to use the Meyle drop links on your recommendation :)

Nice one, and happy new year :)

Does it open if you open another door first (not drivers door)?

It's working normally this morning!!!?  Thanks TMB for the suggestion anyway. At least now I can open it and look at the switches and motors etc.

No probs. The reason I asked if it opens after opening another door first is that a failing microswitch in the drivers door lock can cause the tailgate to fail to open.
