Replacing wing mirrors

Featured Replies

Hello,

Someone has helpfully knocked off both my wing mirrors, smashing the glass and the plastic casings.

I've managed to find some replacements on ebay and i'm going to have a go at replacing them myself.

I would appreciate any tips especially as I've never even removed the door card before!!

I've found a post (see below) in my research so far but does anyone have any other good sources of information for a beginner?

Thanks,

James

It's pretty easy and that post should cover it, once you've done one side, you'll be able to do the other side in half the time.

There are seven screws in the door card. Don't forget the one lurking behind the mirror knob trim…

The trim clips often break when pulling the door card off, so you may need some more...

Before removing the card fully from the door, disconnect the bowden cable from the opening handle.

On the drivers side, disconnect the flashing red light at the door knob.

If your car has red lights at the bottom of the doors rather than just reflectors, disconnect those too.

Once everything is free, including trim clips, lift the door card upwards to pull it out of the window channel (can sometimes be tight).

If they are electric heated/moving mirrors and you are able to solder, it can be a simple job of popping the cover off the inside that hides the mirror fastener, cutting the electrical cable - leaving plenty of spare, undoing the mirror, cutting the cable on the new mirror, bolting the mirror back to position and soldering the correct wires back together, then insulating the joins with tape or heat shrink tube. This method removes the need to remove the door card.

Doorcard removal is only needed if there are remote cables to move the mirror.
