What are your wants and needs? Superb is bigger and more refined. Interior is slightly better too. However of the Octavia has a better spec and will handle a bit better.

I'd probably lean towards the Octavia for the spec unless you need the additional space.

A comfortable motorway cruiser good on mpg and not too expensive to maintain.

Both should suit this requirement well, with the Superb edging it for refinement.

Had that engine in MK3 Octavia and 70mpg is possible on the motorway. Interior quality is better on the Superb having owned 2016 model and driven 16,000miles in it until trading in for my present car. Superb refined, comfy but a bit of a barge. Because handling is more important to me I would pick the Octy because it still has enough room for backseat passengers and a massive boot.

Would 70mpg be possible on the Superb too?

It seems if there is not much difference in price, and if don't mind driving something a bit bigger and sacrificing handling, that the Superb might be a better option.

With the same engine/gearbox the only difference in cost to run and maintain them over say 125,000, should be a slight difference in MPG, maybe 5mpg average? In which case that would be about £1000 over 125,000miles.

Shouldn't be too hard as I managed 64mpg in my 1.4TSi SE manual petrol hatch (MK3 Superb 2016).

I prefer the 'image' that the Skoda badge portrays.

I'm going to the Skoda dealer tomorrow. I think I'll probably end up going for an Octavia SEL. The MPG will be slightly higher and I think I'll be happier the higher the MPG is.

I was at my local Skoda dealer today having the beast serviced and gave it the onceover, a Velvet Red 7 seater Kodiaq SEL (19" ALLOYS) 150bhp TDi which retailed for about £32,800 but nearly laughed when I saw the 1st years road tax (VED) was £515 due ti it's co2 levels. I didn't even like the front seats comparing them to my wife's £23,000 OTR Karoq SEL. The Karoq's 125gm/co2 means 1st year VED was £160 and just received the reminder in the post for 2nd year at £140. Made the Kodiaq seem very expensive for 2 extra seats and it didn't even have picnic tables on the back of the front seats. Should add it was a DSG model presumably with 7 speeds.

Been through exactly this dilemma, althought mine was the 1.4 petrol turbo. Easy decision for me because of the dreadul torsion beam back axle on lower-powered Octavias, which simply can’t hold a candle to the Superb’s comfort-oriented independent suspension.

I’ve had the Superb for 9 months now and would say it comfortably edges the Octavia on ride, refinement, noise, space and interior quality. It’s no Audi, and even the Passat has a degree more finesse, but it is a very relaxing car to drive.

Unless you’re high mileage, do consider the petrol - the 1.4 TSi (now 1.5) is remarkably effective even in a car as big as the Superb.

Just to chip in, the Superb is a very wide and long vehicle, compared to the Octavia, not one for pootling around town looking for parking spaces or squeezing into supermarket or multistorey car park slots.

It far more in its element on a motorway.

I drove 45,000 miles last year, consumption and low running costs really are important to me - I'm still edging to the Octavia because of this as I only really need it to be comfortable on the motorway, everywhere else I don't mind! If I did lower miles, I'd be getting a completely different car!

However, I'll check out the Superb when I visit Skoda tomorrow.

I had the same concern when I switched but it hasn’t made any difference in the end. Just wait til the proximity  sensors turn red!

I'm not concerned about that!

A bigger car might make me feel better about other inadequacies, was this the same for you?

Yes its bonnet is longer than an Octavia, maybe 8" long(er)? :giggle:

Ha! Couldn't find the Sportline Plus Viagra XL SE when I checked out the brochure.

Should have seen what the wife did to my PRISTINE white 2016 Superb when she ventured into a multi-storey car park. Apparently she couldn't see the LARGE concrete pillar holding the next level of the car park up until a loud scraping metal noise came to her attention, then she suggested taking it to a cheap bodyshop because she was paying for the repair. I won that discussion thankfully.:heartbreak:

So the parking sensors worked then....:giggle:

Reminds me of a time I had just arrived by car in Gibraltar, parking is a nightmare. Had been looking for a space for what felt like, and probably was, hours. I eventually found one and some large lady stood in front of my car and smugly waved her friend in in front of me. I was quite annoyed and held my position whilst they manoeuvred their car - they manoeuvred the entire side of their car along a metal pillar holding up the car park and caused a surprising amount of damage - so I can understand the damage your wife must have caused!

I was in a convertible so had that satisfaction of saying loudly, oh, that's a shame before driving off. Their car was not as large as the Superb.

I enjoy parking large cars into small spaces, I did so with a hire (courtesy) car in Bermondsey. I think the car next along was not as impressed as they keyed the entire side of a new Mazda 6. Thankfully I had taken out the no-excess policy.

Why do you think her current car has all the bases covered with standard front/rear parking sensors and a reversing camera (BELTS & BRACES).:whew:

Seriously, the parking sensors on the Superb are way too sensitive forever bleeping, and the visuals on the Columbus not very well designed / helpful. Makes parking in tight spots quite stressful.
