2007 mk2 (Z1) Octavia CarPlay headunit replacement

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a 2007 Skoda Octavia mk2 (Z1) without steering wheel controls and I’m looking for a car stereo headunit with CarPlay and Android, that I want to replace the factory stream mp3 stereo with.

I have been looking at the RCD340G CarPlay Plus Radio Green as an replacement stereo.

Does it work with my Skoda Octavia 2007? Is it any good?

Do I need to replace the radio trim? I have the manual air conditioning controls. If so, what radio trim do I need?

Are there any other things I have to take to consideration?

Hi Benjam,

I just bought and installed a new Android HU for my Octavia 1z5.

I was replacing the Columbus HU with something the same size, so it was basically plug and play.

However, I'm experiencing some technical problems with it (radio tuner does not work at all) and the BT music streaming quality is low.

I'm not saying don't buy one - but I would strongly suggest you find a local company to order from in case you need to return it for any reason, or need to get tech support.

Shipping back to China in this situation would be on you, plus their customer support will not be as good as it will be in your own country.

If your in the UK, you could try the websites below to get an idea of what will fit your dash.

Hi,

Thank you for your replay.

My car is the Octavia 1z3 with the stream mp3 HU and I also wanted to find something that is basically plug and play. But all the new stereos that have been found only fits the Columbus HU so I can swap the radio trim from Stream mp3 to a Columbus.

Audiotechdirect.com and Xtrons.co.uk are good sites but I didn't find anything that supports Apple CarPlay, only Android. That's why I was considering the RCD340G CarPlay Plus, which seems to support both CarPlay and Android.

But I think you are right. Shipping something back to China makes me a bit worried and I don't know if there customer support is good in case of any technical problems.

I will try to find a local company to order from! Thanks!

I am in the same boat, Mk2 1Z Octavia, Its got Stream and its crap, high pitch whine on AM and no BT connectivity. So looking at Android auto rather than CarPlay, much the same, for ease of connectivity. I have spent too much trying to fix the whine, so replacement.

I need mainly quality AM radio, so DAB+, and BT3 for work phone use in-car.

Currently looking at a (high for me/low for them) priced Kenwood DMX 8018 S7 and currently investigating if I need to be using Aerpro bits and fascia to make it all plug and play. There are pricier Kenwood HU, including a really neat one that accepts dash cam input, but they would require better speakers and Dynamat type sound proofing to extract the extra value.

I am avoiding import things like Joying, as enticing as the price, compatibility promises and their online support for plug and play add-ons is,  for exactly the reasons given above. And online forums tend to support the buy local view, international problems can only be that, a problem.

Also I'm in Australia, so some of this may not apply.

So decided on a Kenwood DDX9018, trying to fit but not all peace and light, reverse camera issues, image is breaking up badly as soon as engine is started. Beyond me, its at the local auto elec. Overnight triage.

Wondering if the nearby Skoda aerial amplifier is the culprit. The radio always squealed on AM band.

Sorry for late reply.

I agree with you. Stream is really bad and I can’t wait to update it. I have checked out Kenwood and Pioneer players that support Carplay (because me and my wife have iPhones). They are little pricier and I guess they would require better speaker’s and soundproofing to extract the extra value. Too bad that you have had some issues with reverse camera etc. Hopefully you get them resolved.

Did you change the radio trim or did the Kenwood fit the original Stream trim?

Thanks for your thought on Joying. Still considering buying the RCD330G Plus. I found a Czech Republic website that is sales the same radio and they seem to have better custom service. I know it's a bit risky because I don’t know all compatible issues it may have.

Let me know how it goes with your Kenwood DDX9018

HI, thanks for the followup.

No rush, still sorting it. Reverse cam was triggering weird stuff in the Skoda's onboard computer. Not my area, but it required a separate relay to power the camera, after that all ok there.

The head unit is amazing. Touch screen works well, is actually intuitive and easy to learn. I like the hidden CD DVD slot and adjustable screen angle to reduce glare. Also good is the integrated Kenwood dash cam.  The awesome sound with standard speakers in the garage makes me think I should do the sound deadening thing to get the best out of it on road.

Maybe Dynamatting the floor and front doors. Bit dear though. There is hardware store sold roofing patch material which comes in 20cm wide rolls and looks identical to one Dynamat product. Both are aluminium foil laid over black gunk with a peel off paper backing. I have a bunch left over from an awning project.

Missing was a second patch harness for the steering wheel control. The 1Z Mk2 Skoda is rare in Australia so maybe that's why we have to use patches on patches. Aerpro failed to tell me, so I had to source a universal patch, only $10 but two long drives to get that right.

The only really not OK bit is the Aerpro plastic surround trim, facia kit thingy. Their dedicated, Skoda-matching kit ($103.00 AUD) doesn't integrate with Stream radios fascia. Don't buy it. It requires major surgery to both the existing Skoda radio trim clips and the Aerpro supplied trim which is only about 15 mm across. You'd have to cut all the clips and glue them together, somehow getting the spacing right.

I rang Aerpro in Melbourne twice to ensure I had the right part before ordering, including letting them know I had the Stream version. When called afterwards, straight up they said, yes, we are hearing it doesn't fit the Mk2s. We will get back to you once we have a fix, a few weeks. Meanwhile the HU just hangs there. I painted the mounting brackets black...

Overall worthwhile, though a lot dearer than anticipated due to cost of wiring and fascia kit.

If anyone knows where to get a better solution, I'd be keen.

I did a bit of a review on the RCD330G here
