Maximum Load Rating?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I want to get some Michelin CrossClimate+ tyres for the MY16 Superb Estate which currently has Pirelli P7s (OEM). The load rating of the P7s is 94. Michelin recommend CrossClimate wheels at a load of 98.

Looking at the MOT regulations, it suggests that anything higher than spec is ok.

Phoning my insurance (Aviva), they seemed fairly non-plussed about higher ratings and said that all-season tyres tend to come in a higher rating anyway.

However, looking at various threads, there is a suggestion that higher rated tyres will throw out pressures etc.

I have requested a certificate of conformity from VW to see what they say, but I imagine thats going to take a while to come.

So, does anyone know a) if the Superb COC has a specified maximum load rating, or b) if putting a 98 instead of a 94 on sounds like a bad idea?

Thanks!

I’ve got 98V XL winters on mine, not had any pressure issues since swapping over in November.

As you say, insurance companies don’t seem bothered (even sound like they wonder why you’re bothering to call them).

Pressures won’t change, but the stiffer sidewall can firm up the ride slightly and (in theory) the higher rolling resistance increases consumption. The upside is a sportier, more stable drive with more responsive steering and less deformation means you also get better cornering. It’s perfectly legal to use a higher rated tyre... just like a higher speed rating is allowed.

Ok, thanks both; thats useful.

I should be able to compensate for any lack of compliance with a different DCC setting I would have thought (I tend to leave it in sport at the minute)

Thanks!

I asked the same question of my fitter when putting Goodyear asymmetric 3s on the front of mine this week (98Y versus the P7 94W). Their view was exactly the same - as long as you are fitting a higher rating, there isn't an issue. I'm running the new ones at the same pressure as the old ones but will monitor if they need more or less.

Yeah, that would be useful to know how you get on seeing as you have just gone to the same rating as me
