Brake pads not fully contacting discs

Featured Replies

Was having a look at my wheels at the weekend and noticed the rear discs are far more worn looking than the fronts.  I know this has been well covered on here before and its possibly due to the e brake.  The front discs are polished up like new but the rear ones are a bit worn looking.

One side is causing me a bit of concern - it looks as if the brake pad is only making contact with part of the disc - just over half. The attached pic shows that the outer section of the disc is rusted so is not being "polished" by the pads.  What could be causing this?

The brakes feel absolutely fine - no noise, no squealing, no scraping.  I've done a few "urgent" stops since and they feel perfect.

Car is going in for a service next week so I'll get them checked out then but a bit of prior advice would be welcome!

Also  - do you get a warning on the dash to tell you when brake pads are due for renewal?  Would have thought so in the L&K.

Thanks

I’d say you need new rear discs, or the existing ones skimmed. Just putting on new pads won’t fix the problem. As far as I’m aware there is no sensor for worn rear pads, unless it’s something the EPB works out. Mine were down to 2mm after 30,000 miles, no warnings.

I’d be inclined to go for non OEM discs, the OEM ones are made of cheese!

I would say the pads were incorrectly fitted or there's a problem with the caliper. IIRC, on another thread, a member who got his changed under warranty (after pressing his dealer) was told that they found when they changed them that the pads had been fitted wrong at the factory and also the caliper pistons were sticking.

Well known issue. All VAG group vehicles does this (with electric brakes)...

What, that partial coverage?

Thanks for the reply.  The other side is not as bad but there is a slight outer ring.

Looks to me like this one is not engaging properly - calipers?  Or a bit of the pad has broken off - unlikely?

Unlikely pad has broken up. Unfortunately needs stripping down to examine and fitting new parts is easiest way to repair

I would say its a warranty job as its grossly abnormal wear.

Thanks again, I'll be taking that approach!
