Skoda Instruction manual

Featured Replies

Just ordered a new Skoda Superb Estate ( SE L Executive 2.0 Tdi 150 DSG ) to replace my Elegance 170 version. I downloaded the manual - unfortunately it appears that I will have to add a PhD to the masters degree in Computer Science and Technology/Philosophy that I studied to try and understand the manual on my current model! ;)

Dear Lord - the mind boggles!  Still at least I understood the bit where they pointed out that sitting sideways and driving with the door open and your head out of the window was potentially dangerous!

I wonder if anyone has ever got to the end of their ownership of one of these and totally understood all the functions?

Same with nearly every car on the market.

Where there should be an interactive smartphone app which shows you how to do stuff, or a pocket-sized get-you-started guide to all the basics, they dump a badly-translated novel on you.

Appalling customer service in one not-so-handy guide.

  Close to 100% wrong there (only not sure about the first sentence), good job.

@Mph25 By downloading "My Skoda" app on Android (maybe it exists in iOS too, no idea) not only you get the Owner's manual with you at all times with the very useful functionality of searching, but also, a series of  "Quick tips", "Before you start", "Video tips" and "Simply Clever" guides that cover plenty of stuff from basic maintenance bits like checking oil or attaching roof bars, to explanation of important features of the car via video or illustration. A surprisingly good application overall. Ideal to introduce new owners to the myriads of options and functionalities of the car without forcing them through 300+ text pages. Currently awaiting delivery and going through that stuff bit by bit. Definitely give it a go, I discovered a few good tips on the way so far.

Thanks for that - I'll give that a go!  The irritation with the main manual is partly that they seem to assume you have added £10,000 of extras onto the vehicle - and give you instructions for stuff you don't need!

I have got the brief guide - something in between the two might be good!

I wonder whether we’re talking about the same thing here.

When I bought my Superb I was asked by the dealer to download and sign up to an app called Skoda Connect, which has minimal information and I don’t find very useful (hence my comments). Is there something else or has Skoda Connect changed? On my phone (Apple) it  looks nothing like the display above.

Not a replacement for connect. It’s got a digital manual, found it useful a couple of times. Also shows digital service record, not detailed though.

Like most tech docs from global companies, they likely aren’t written in English to begin with; so there’s plenty of scope for pertinent and concise information to be ‘lost in translation’

No, Skoda Connect is something else. My Skoda is the app that offers all the information in exactly the way you described you'd like a few posts above  ;)

No idea is the iOS implementation is similar to Android where it works fine, but give it a go.

That’s a mystery (and a disappointment) solved!

All I had was Skoda Connect and the usual novel-length (and poorly-translated) handbook, so I hope you understand where I was coming from. To me, clear, simple explanations of the armoury of standard safety features is vital and handbooks just don’t do that very well.

The dealer hadn’t told me about My Skoda or anything else, so I’ll download and try out. Fingers-crossed...

Well of-course a dealer would not provide any real useful information other than taking your order, were you really surprised?  When I asked mine whether something similar existed he said: You have to download Skoda Connect. I said that doesn't seem like it's any help for what I'm after (manuals and info on learning about how various stuff of the car works) so I dis-regarded him and went ahead and downloaded My Skoda. I also kindly let him know after, just how useful and well executed that app is.

First of all congratulations on a good choice. If it's any consolation I did the same when choosing my Mk3, with much the same results as you. I found that reading the manual for a car you don't yet have is a bit like learning to swim by reading a book on it - difficult to impossible! The good news is that if you spend an hour in the car just pressing the buttons, most things will become almost immediately obvious. The My Skoda app is very helpful, as are the literally hundreds of videos available on (eg) YouTube, but they won't beat playing around for yourself. And yes I know how frustrating that is when you are waiting for the car to arrive!

Another bit of good news is this place - I asked lots of (really dumb) newbie questions on here, before and after I picked up mine and without exception got helpful and generous responses:). Last bit of good news - like you I moved from Mk2 to Mk3. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Jeff.  Not that I ever got fully to grips with my mark II... ;)  I have now downloaded the app though so will spend some  time on that. And yes., Youtube - I'd just thought of that so will look there as well. I just wish one didn't spend so much time trying to ignore stuff about features you then realise you didn't buy (I don't add extras to my cars other than paint!)

One tip that might help. At some point your dealer will generate or get a specification sheet (I bought mine ex-demo so don't know when it gets generated for new cars). It has the Skoda codes and a dodgily-translated explanation of what each is, for the things you have on your car (and nothing else). Get them to email it to you, then you can ignore the bits of the manual / app / videos that don't apply to your spec.
