self levelling headlights after a change or rear coil springs?

Featured Replies

Hi there, coil spring snapped on my 2009 L&K estate last week, ats replaced with kyb springs and they sit a little high on the arches but presumably they will settle after a couple of weeks, however my headlight beam is too low now and makes it difficult to drive at night

possible causes? could the rear sensor have been damaged when they swapped out the springs? or would a headlight reset fix the issue? if so would this be a dealer job or could a backstreet garage perform this?

the lights are still doing the start up sequence when turned on so this means the motors etc are working fine.

its annoying cause I have had the car 8 years and the lights are the best feature about it, and now they are buggered :)

cheers

Mike

You should check both level sensors are undamaged and correctly orientated, they'll be on the UK passenger side.

Assuming they're fine, you'll probably need the headlight alignment doing. Given it's had suspension changes, ideally, you'd also use VCDS or similar to perform 'basic settings' on the xenon range controller to relearn the suspension heights.

as above check that the rear n/s sensor isn't damaged or disconnected as you will need to disconnect it  to remove the spring.

I have been under there just checked the rear sensor, there looks like a new screw has been put in at the end of the rod on the sensor, I suspect they didn't unscrew it before changing the spring and didn't notice before they unbolted the wheel arm, seems to be working ok though, I have a bit of weight in the boot to settle the springs a bit but lights still too low, seems like a reset of the range controller might resolve the issue,

cheers for the advice,

Mike

Can you take a picture of the level sensor?

can I purchase a VCDS? would it be simple enough for an idiot to do? can someone briefly explain what I need and how much it will cost? I don't have a laptop so could it be a stand alone  unit?

cheers

Mike

Genuine VCDS is around £225 but you'd need a laptop and a headlight aim tool as used in the MOT...

Where are you based? A local member might be able to help.

That sensor looks correctly orientated, sometimes they can flip the wrong way when suspension work has been done.

These threads might help you find a local VCDS member:

Even when the basic settings have been done, it'll still need the headlight aim checking/adjusting using a proper headlight alignment tool.
