190 DSG 4x4 Higher Mileage

Featured Replies

Hi All,

ive got a 190 4x4 DSG Estate that I’ve had since new in 2016. It’s now coming up to 73000 miles and its first MOT. I might be imaging it but I think I can hear some noise from the prop shaft / haldex / wheel bearings. Has anyone got any experience of a 4x4 at this mileage and/or any thoughts at what’s going to need looking at at this sort of mileage? I’ve loved driving the car and want to keep it going as long as possible so I’d like to consider any preventative maintenance that may be required :) Any info will be gladly received. Thanks, Steve

What maintenance/oil changes have you had done to the Haldex system?

The Haldex oil was changed at around 50k miles which was later than it should have been done, the dealer I took it to for a service at 29k didn’t change the oil nor inform me that it needed to be changed (I should have checked myself but assumed I would have been told..). Other than that it’s always been to a proper dealer for all services but I did wonder about the late Haldex oil change being a potential problem.

Mines on 48500mls 280 4x4. Dec 2016.  Had it serviced 2 weeks ago and dsg done (late - ex lease not done/ recorded). I asked about the haldex service, after looking it up was told at 3yrs with brake fluid change.

I supppse get it in to dealer quick before the mot...keep us informed if you are told otherwise re service interval.

3 years or 30,000 miles which ever comes first, but then Skoda, VW, Audi & SEAT are never going to be saying the same thing.

But 3 years or 30,000 miles is what it should be.

May book it in sooner then.... No advantage in delaying till next srrvice. Cheers.

30,000 miles is what the dealer in Nottingham told me and the dealer in Lincoln didn’t - it’s such an important bit of kit that I was pretty cheesed off when I realised it had done far too many miles before getting an oil change.

Oh and be weary of dealers saying the Haldex filter doesn't need any maintenance.  It's not a drop in part like it was previously but it should still be stripped and cleaned.  I was speaking to an independent specialist in December and he said he's been doing a lot of Golf R's and has been surprised that dealers/service depts are telling customers the filters are totally maintenance free.

IIRC a fair few Volvo drivers learned this the hard way...

My Superb 190DSG 4x4 has covered almost 39000 miles and has recently started to get quite noisy. The noise is quite hard to describe but is a sort of a rumble that is coming from the rear of the car and is only noticeable above 50 mph. I'm also starting to feel a slight vibration (though could be my imagination).

My last car was a Hyundai Santa Fe and the 4x4 system on that was very similar to the Superb's with an electronically controlled clutch (Haldex unit?) at the rear to engage 4 wheel drive. I had a nightmare with it in 2014 when it developed a fault with the Haldex unit that went undiagnosed by 2 dealerships. To cut a long story short, the clutch locked it into 4 wheel drive and quickly wrecked 2 transfer boxes. The first box was changed under warranty but when the 2nd was wrecked after just 200 miles, I had a right battle with Hyundai UK who refused to authorise a second warranty repair, saying that the fault was caused by tread depth differences between the rear and front sets of tyres. It wasn't until the dealers road-tested the car after the 2nd transfer box was fitted that they discovered the Haldex unit was goosed, despite me telling them there was a strong possibility it was. I eventually won the battle with Hyundai but I don't want to go through the same experience with Skoda.

Is there any way of telling if the car is going into 4wd? Is there any way of disabling the system for diagnostic purposes?

Check the rear tyres on the inside edge for a sawtooth pattern.

This can sometimes cause a noise and vibration from the rear of the car.

Hi,

I've experienced a similar problem with my Volvo XC60. Took it to the main dealer thinking it was a problem with the Haldex and I couldn't see if or when the car had the Haldex oil changed, as I bought the car used about a year ago. Turned out it was the suspension bushings at the rear, both sides replaced for around £250 including parts and labour.

Forgot to add, this was a fault from about 75,000 miles

See this thread:

Had the haldex oil changed today. 49000mikes but 2 years old. Was told on arrival it was not needed yet but I 'insisted'. I asked about cleaning the filter and a technician was quite keen not to.  Not had problems with them and didnt want to risk damaging the rubber seals unnecessarily. Showed him some if the pictures from another site. Ended up agreeing that if the oil came out black / gloopy they'd look further.

He took a photo of the old oil draining out for me. Honey coloured and clear. I'm happy its not clogging internally. £69 for peace of mind.
