Top Speed Question

Featured Replies

This is just a query as I rarely go over the 100 with a car, I leave that to the bike.

There are loads of messages about top speed being anywhere from 130 to 145 but my vrs seems to run out of steam at about 110 ish. I've only tried a couple of times, once when standard with just me in the car and the other week coming home from the Scottish bike show with the dragon box and 3 other adults in the car. Got to 110 easy then just seemed to hit a brick wall and would only go a couple of mph faster even though there was plenty of road left and I had my foot to the floor (sixth gear, didn't try 5th). If I had put it into 5th I think it would have been at the top of the rev range anyway and needed to change up.

Is this usual? does it take ages to get to the higher end of the speed range?

Should creep to 120 easily enough, on the flat. :)

had 135 indicated on mine up a slight incline on a private road.

Remember the fabia is about as aerodynamic as a brick. That is a huge factor in limiting acceleration over 100mph.

Having said that I'm like an athlete ;) but the other 3 in the car like their bait and beer. The cars not lowered but it will have been with them in.

Indicated > 130 mph when it was being run in, standard, slight downhill gradient.

Pre-remap it definitely starts to feel it's brick shape over the ton though. Now it will pull through that too, although I don't hit those speeds in the UK of course :)

The car still feels totally planted though and in that sense safe. My car has had a fair bit of work done to it now which IMHO makes it safer as it can scrub off the speed and go round bends ok even with the heavy lump up front.

Not gonna keep up with a bike though :D

Weight Doesent have as much effect on the top speed of the car, unlike acceleration. That's why Ford Transits go so fast:)

my car reaches 130 very easily indeed, never managed 140 i dont think, got very close but remember it's probably more like 133 and mine has a lot more power than a standard one - having said that, mike at jabba did map mine for ingear acceleration not top speed.

This was done at Burn airfield near Selby mid last year. My TDCi Mondeo however with a dragon tuning box did hit an indicated 150 but like others have said:

the fabia has the aerodynamics of a brick (very poor drag coefficiency).

How old is your car?

If it is new (sub 10000 miles) the engine is probably still quite tight.

It will free up with mileage, allowing better acceleration and top speed

Mine did an indicated 140 before remap and 145 afterwards. Both were on the same stretch of track which is very down hill. On flat it will do about 120 / 125.

The roadster on the other hand starts to whistle at about 85, which is where i now draw the line - lol.

220km/h again just the other day...2 am and empty highway too.

It's an 04 with 31,000 on the clock so it should be nice and loose.
