Race Chip faulty?

Featured Replies

I started getting EPC faults coming up. Front assist, electronic parking brake, auto hold and one other that I can't remember now.

I was about to phone the garage but then realised that I had the throttle box installed. This was the only thing non standard so I thought I had better take it out anyway. Good job I did because now all the faults have gone.

The box is just under two years old so I have a chance to send it back under quarantee.

I never thought that a faulty box would throw up so many unrelated faults but you live and learn

You're not the first. I had the same problem after a few months and I know of at least a couple of others. I suspect a batch of faulty components.

I had mine replaced and it's been faultless since and that was about two years ago.

Don't trust these plug & play devices, they seem to cause plenty of errors including limp home mode whereas 6 custom remaps in and not one single error code flagged up and not even a mention of my stage 2 tuned Octy from the Skoda dealer who recently serviced it because they know how reliable it is and how economical it is because they haven't seen my car since I bought it from them new back in August 2017.

Lol, where do I start with this message... :tongueout:

He speaks about a pedal box, not a tuning box that you compare it to. This is a much simpler device (simply alters the voltage at the pedal sensor), that you just plug 'n' forget and it works as it should with you usually forgetting it's even there, no lights no nothing. Seems this company is known for a faulty batch, so I'd say 99,9% of all such products are usually trouble free, nothing to see here. Plot twist: Your throttle response even after a custom remap is still not as keen as one with a pedal box. Try one and you might be surprised. They are THE #1 mod for any modern VAG vehicle. Ex anti-pedal box, currently convert speaking here.

Your Skoda dealer would have no business checking the flash counter of your ECU unless you were going in for an engine or gearbox related warranty claim. The TD1 flag doesn't just show up at any diagnostics or other dealer operations via the OBD port so it's normal that nothing was found during the service. You can be 100% sure though that since you're mapped you are already without drivetrain warranty, should you ever need it (knock wood). Something which is not true for tuning boxes.

PS. First service in 1.5 years or serviced elsewhere too?

I am very pleased for you and your conversion but there is absolutely no delay between applying the throttle and my car heading for the horizon thanks to 476NM at 2,000rpm. Acceleration from 110-250kph takes 1km in 6th gear (manual gearbox).:notme:

Except, there is! This has nothing to do with how much torque you make or where either, otherwise pedal boxes would add power which they don't, it's about increasing throttle actuator sensitivity at the early part of the pedal travel. You achieve the same result but you use less pedal, in a more linear fashion, and it just feels better and more natural to be able to modulate throttle from the very first cm. It's also nothing similar to "pressing the throttle more" as some people (myself included) think/thought. You won't/can't know how bad your throttle map actually is before driving a similar car with a pedal box or putting it on yours for a test-drive, problem is after you do you're never going back.

PS. The above were tested and verified on a 370bhp custom mapped GTI Clubsport and a 400bhp Leon Cupra so we should have the 335.9bhp Octavia covered too... :)

Race Chip have sent me a complete new unit so that's a result.

The only problem I have is it has grown in size, there is a largist box connecting the two sockets. That seems to have all the circuit boards in and then there's another smaller round dial for changing the settings.

Funnily enough I've got used to the standard throttle now and wondering if I can be bothered to fit it. It seems to be missing a fixing kit but I don't think I would be screwing it to the car anyway.

Ah, 'the brain' and the controller?  That's the box I had.  Very good it was too and easily adjustable.

If you look in the footwell there's a small area to the right where the 'brain' will sit (just behind the plastic trim) and from there the cables for the controller can be fed into the cubby on the right of the steering wheel.   No need for tie wraps, velcro or similar.
