Cannot find out if i should change the chain on 1.2 tsi

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I just bought an 2010 Octavia 1.2 tsi. The chain makes noise 1-2 seconds when startet in the morning, but nothing during the day. It does not progress.

In 2013 it got a new chain and tensioner, and the engine software was updated, and have driven 120.000 km on that chain.

The reason that am in doubt about changing the chain, is that i often hear and read about that when people gets a new chainset, then it is wrong again after like 30-40.000 km.

The kit my car got installed in 2013 was the 03F-198-158-A, with the good "B" tensioner.

After reading on http://skoda-fabia-israel.blogspot.com/search/label/engine where he instruct in checking intake adaptation values (these values are adapted due to timind differences between crank and camshaft), and they should give you a pretty good idea if you chain is elongated. Is the adaption values high, the chain is too long, and the engine therefore have to compensate a lot. if you scroll down a bit on the link, you can see some examples of the values from engines with a lot of chain-noise, and from engines where the chain just have been replaced. My own adaption values is par with the ones of a just changed chain, and my chain has droven 120.000 km. So im thinking something like, maybe im lucky that my chain is just happy, and by changing it, i could induce new troubles, and the next chain only will hold up for like 40.000 km.

Here is my values from the ECU X_intake_camshaft_signaledge.......

Hello there I have a 2010 Octavia 1.2tsi if its noisy change it!  My tensioner failed and cost me 3500euro after it Bent valves damaged head and needed new rings! Please take my advice its a fault that skoda refuse to admit or take responsibility for. Shortly after the repair 2months I had my gear box and clutch need replacing I'm selling mine they are not worth the hassle and I loved my car!  I had a 2002 Octavia before this one and drove it 11 years with no issues. The fault with timing chains was not fixed till late 2014 when skoda went back to a belt which you service every 80k. Please take my advice and get this seen to ASAP
