VCDS indications of cam belt/chain wear

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm a real VCDS newb. I'm just looking at a used Mk III vRS with 84k miles on the clock. My mechanic was able to see the cam chain angle error on my Mk II FL with VCDS and tell me how near being worn out the chain was. Does a Mk III vRS have a cam belt or a chain?

Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to see the health of the cam belt/chain with VCDS on the new one I'm looking at and explain how to do it before I hand over my money?

Thanks,

Paul.

MK3 VRS TSI is chain cam, though I haven't seen any real widespread issue like the MK2 facelift had with tensioners.

Diesel is belt.

Not sure how you check with VCDS but I'd be surprised if a seller let you plug in and start messing around with a prospective purchase.

Thanks. I know the 2 FL VCDS can tell you the cam chain angle (Was told it should be close to 0. If it hits 3.5 I was told I want to be looking at having it done very soon. If it hits 6, bad things happen)

I've promised I won't make any changes to the car but I made pretty clear that, if they won't let me read the codes, I'm very much less likely to buy it. It's at a dealer so I'm hoping they will be understanding.

They can refuse but I've never had a dealer/seller refuse to allow me to carry out my own diagnostics on a second hand car.
