Hello, possible new Skoda owner

Featured Replies

Hello to all, as ever confusing myself as to the right thing to do or buy in this case! So as a family have had 3 diesel cars over the years which we tend to keep long term till they die. At the moment have a 2006 Renault Mégane 1.5dci ( an emergency purchase) which I have a love/hate relationship with and a 1998 Peugeot 806 1.9 which has given sterling service over 12 years as a people carrier/van etc etc. However the trusty 806 now has various issues , costs £240 to tax and now that kids are older and we are not humping MDF etc back from Wickes every week ( loathe DIY) looking at getting a cheaper diesel. So over the past few days have been researching a Skoda Rabia Greenline 1.4 tdi 2008 that a local dealer has for sale. £30 road tax and 60mpg seems perfect . The car will mainly do 2 X 65 mile motorway trips to work a week , circa 5000miles p/a. The car we are looking at has 103,000 miles on, fsh, new clutch and cambelt so in theory should be good to go. I have no real interest in ride quality or performance just looking for a reliable cheap to run workhorse. Up to last night was all set on buying car today, but then noticed some reviews on various sites saying the 1.4 tdi engine is not as reliable as seems, so now back wondering what to do. Understand that with emissions laws nowadays diesel engines are more restricted compared to the XUD in our 806 but is a newer diesel albeit 2008 model at 100,000 + miles past its best and problems waiting around the corner? Sorry to rattle on for so long any advice gratefully received.
