The Car in question is a 2014 Octavia 2.0 TDI CR vRS 5dr Diesel Estate

Questions:

1) Whats it like to live with / park / drive etc

2) Typically, how much does a service cost?

3) Typical cost of tyres for the car

4) Road Tax Cost?

5) Any issues with the octavia (typical failures etc...)

I bought a 2014 '63reg Octavia 2.0 TDI CR DSG Elegance (not VRS) diesel hatch back in mid 2017, outright. Blessed with a baby in early 2018.

1. It's great car to live with, huuuuuge boot, fits everything plus the high chair.

Parking is easy at first, because my previous car didn't have parking sensor. But I'm now used to our other car's 360 camera, parking feels a bit off. Once you get used to this, parking is a breeze.

Driving is okay, feels planted on the motorway. But around town, the internal combustion engine is very annoying in comparison to our other car, which is an EV.

2. Fixed servicing cost at main dealership: https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/servicing-maintenance-fixed-price

3. I have 18inch wheels, which I believe so does VRS as standard. Premium tyres range from £88 to £110 a corner. I highly recommend Michelin CrossClimate+

4. £30-£120 depend on your gearbox as mentioned

5. My car waterpump failed about 6 months into my ownership, 4 years old. I was forced to bring forward timing belt + waterpump change by a year. There is a big thread on this forum regarding this typical failure.

Water may collect in the door still after rain, not a failure, but annoying and possible rust location.

No other issue with my car, good workhorse.

I bought an octy vrs estate as i have 2 young kids and the focus was just not big enough at times.

So much space in the octy and its great to drive in comparison to the focus!

Only had mine since Saturday and done a couple of hundred miles in it and its brilliant. Very happy with it.

Only downside is the mpg figures! Mines a petrol as daily commute is only 5 miles each way

Tax on my estate is zero? :nerd:

bit of a female dog to park, but very glad I have sensors and display

mines ‘only’ a SE L 65 plate, but it’s packed with gadgets galore!

I have a 65 plate estate SEL (1.6 diesel) and my tax is £20. Do they just make it up? :)

@NikTheGeek does yours have 17 inch wheels? At one point you could add 16 inch wheels as a no cost option but it would drop the tax to the £0 bracket as it allowed the car to be 99g/km CO2.

Bugger, yes it does. I would have preffered 16's too. In fact I've put 16's on it anyway (for winter). Oh well, it's only £20. I'm more concerned about my mpg. I'm getting 44 on a 12 mile A road and motorway commute and that's in eco mode and driving sedately. A 600 mile round trip to Plymouth with auto cruise enabled and set to 70 only gave me 52. Other people tell me theirs is doing up to 60! Maybe it has been remapped. It feels fast - not that I have anything Skoda-wise to compare it to...

Nick

I'd thought 1.6 diesel can get mpg in 60's. My 2.0 diesel on my 30 miles mostly motorway commute I get 50-55mpg, depend on season and how fast I set adaptive cruise. 150 miles to my parents I usually get 55-60mpg.

Smaller wheels in theory can definitely give better economy. But winter tyres are said to make MPG go south.

I have noticed a difference in economy when I switched my front tyres from horrible budget tyres to Goodyear EfficientGrip performance on my EV, its rear is some Yokohama Eco. So tyres do make a difference.

My average mpg, this is fairly typical and the dash is calibrated to be accurate, I checked and this is slightly under what it really does.
