Ignition key won't turn

Hi, first time on this forum and your help would be great.

I have a problem with the ignition on my '56' Octavia, I can insert the key into the ignition but I am unable to turn the key, I also noticed that steering lock isn't on as I can freely turn the steering wheel without the key being in. 

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Try a squirt of liquid magic AKA WD-40

Is it an automatic? If so, the lever might not quite be in Park. The car then won't let you turn the key.

if the above advice fails sounds like the mechanism in the ignition barrel has failed and you will need a new one
