Tyre 235/4517

Featured Replies

Hi!

Has anyone tried to put tires 235/45/17 instead of 225/50/17?

Is this a problem because rim is 7 inches?

Thanks

Personally I wouldn't. I have 2 sets of alloys for my Octavia. 7.5J winter 18" with 225/40 and 8.5J summer 19" with 235/35 tyres. These I feel are the perfect compromise to ensure no fouling with vertical movement of the suspension components whilst allowing maximum lock whilst parking (again without any fouling). I have driven both combinations on my car at very high speed and the 225/40 tyre gives just a small increase in floatiness at those high speeds (all my tyres are rated at 186mph maximum for safety reasons). Comparing wheel/tyre corner weights my 18" alloys weigh 21.9kg and the 19" alloys weigh 22.5kg so not much in this either.

WRONG WORD

  1. That tyre size is not type approved for the Yeti in the EU.
  2. Putting a wider tyre on a rim that's too narrow for it (as your screenshot seems to indicate would be the case) doesn't sound like a good idea to me, even if it's only 0.5".  You probably wouldn't die, or kill anyone else, but I suspect it could lead to uneven tyre wear.
  3. That 6% shallower sidewall probably would probably have a deleterious effect on the ride quality, which many people feel is harsh even with the 225/50s.  (Reference the various threads on here about 16" vs 17" wheels.)

But it's your car...

......and poorer fuel economy due to increased mechanical and aero drag. Snow chains on the front won’t fit either.

If it matters to you of course.

You cant use snow chains on the front of a yeti with standard 17 inch tyres due to limited clearance between the sidewall and the suspension, so it is quite likely this wider tyre may rub and damage itself, as 5mm nearer the shock etc

As stated above you would have to declare to your insurance company as a modification and may well have issues as not an approved tyre for the car.
