spare wheel sizes

had dreaded flat today on me yeti , whilst still deciding "to spare or not to spare"  wife rang saying she had a flat so rushed to her aid and reluctantly got the dreaded gooo and pump out , followed instructions but to no avail as it turns out the use by date on the goo read 30/7/17 and a kind motorist who stopped said the goo doesn't work if past its date so had to take wheel off and take to a fitters and get them to just put a £50 cheapo on , as need to replace the fronts in spring anyway .. would of been buggered on the motorway if this had happened so am wondering if you can have a 5th full size ally as a spare with the false floor in .

any input welcome

..yes, you can buy the spare wheel kits (includes the "floor", either directly from Skoda, of from e-bay.....been thinking about getting one myself...

(I seem to remember about £250...or £110 for just the wheel and tyre...)

cheers for that Stubod , but can you fit a actual proper road wheel in the boot space

The "full size" spare is actually a higher profile R16 as opposed to the R17 fitted. It has a comparable load and speed rating and a very similar rolling diameter, but as it's not exactly the same you are speed restricted.

When the spare wheel and kit is in place the boot floor is more or less flush with the entrance into the boot. The attached photos may help.

ps - if you were to swap the spare over for a damaged road wheel then it would sit a little higher in the well. This is allowed for as the boot floor has a hinged strip in it allowing for the extra 30mm

thanks Colin do you think a actual full size ally as per the road 4 fit in that space

It will fit but it will be about an inch higher.

do you mean it would push the height of the floor up an inch or would the inch be accommodated in the space below

the R16 spare  is a 195. The R17 road wheels are 225. When you put the road wheel into the well it stands proud by an extra 30mm. This is allowed for as along the back edge of the lift out boot floor is another hinged area. This allows the boot floor to raise by 30mm, but it becomes 30mm shorter and no longer reaches to the edge of the boot opening.

Have you tried the string plug system? It consists of a reamer to clear the puncture hole, some adhesive and a device to fit a string ‘plug’ into the cleaned hole, then use compressor supplied with goo to reinflate tyre. Obviously no good if the puncture is in the side wall but otherwise it receives excellent reviews as a fix to easily get you home. Easily obtained off internet sources.

Alternatively AA now carry multifit spare wheels to get you to your destination. I believe AA collect the spare wheel from approved tyre fitters where you get your puncture repaired.

Incidentally it is a really bad idea to change a tyre on the hard shoulder of a motorway, about the most dangerous thing you can do and many drivers have lost their life trying to change wheels on hard shoulders. As a policeman friend of mine says just get everyone out of the car over the barrier then call for help, he has seen too many people hurt by cars rear ended on the motorway or drivers struck by passing vehicles.

It will push the upper floor up an inch. There is no room below because the wheel sits on the base of the boot.

That is nothing to do with Japan.  That is a Chinese Yeti with the longer wheelbase; note the rear doors are longer.
A spare wheel carrier of that type is illegal in the EU and most of the rest of the world since when folded out it obscures one set of rear lights.

If you think about it the original wheel has to fit into the boot by design as otherwise you would have to abandon it when you put the spare on!!

I have a full size 17" spare in my boot. Floor is level with the top of the boot lip and I have added spacers between the floor and the boxes under. In hindsight I should have put the spacers under the boxes. Works well for me but does reduce the boot capacity by a lot, I did it in the first week of ownership so haven't missed the space.

I think if I had my boot rammed full with cases and/or boxes it would be a struggle to get the full sized spare in - unless it was flat of course - it would then be easier!
