Really? That would be a hell of a long supply chain.

 

Wouldn’t surprise me, though, as Skoda is all about unseen components being cheaper. Or not there at all in the case of sound deadening.

That explains a lot, no wonder he quality of them is shocking. 

Made in China is not an issue, they will produce anything to any quality the customers want.

Chinese steel is not exactly renowned for it’s quality though is it?

They built the New Forth Crossing with it.   It built the new UK Aircraft Carriers and it was to build the new Nuclear Power Stations, probably the Trident Replacement subs as well.

So Oil Tankers, Oil Rigs, Ships, Wind Turbines and lots and lots more in the UK and UK waters all built with Chinese Steel, some from UK Steel Mills.

There are no Iron mines in the UK, and not much in the way of coal, lots in Australia though.

We send off our scrap they produce steel and send it back.

Apologies for the mere wind up. If there is a stamp at all I would never see it now as it would be corroded to the point on ineligibility. 

I replaced all 4 severely corroded brake discs, pads and all 4 completely rusted out backplates, also the headlights (for driving in France) shock absorbers and other parts I cant recall with quality parts from Germany, every single part was made in China and in European OE packaging, in fact I dont think there is a part that I have bought for this vehicle that didnt come from China via Germany.

 

All have been good quality and they would have to try really hard to make something inferior to the VAG originals.

 

I think my Lesjofors springs are made in Sweden from Swedish steel but who knows, maybe they are just repackaged there.

Where the steel comes from doesn’t really matter in quality terms as it has to meet an international standard grade.

 

Only issue is price & supply chain and manufacturers generally like to keep them short, except when price is significantly lower. Hence the journey of steel manufacturing from UK to eastern Europe to China.

Maybe use the grade of carbon steel used by Mercedes higher end model cars. They seem to appreciate the aesthetic consideration of fitting a large wheel and a disc behind that will not rot faster than an Austin metro. 

I would say all mass produced cars are cheap. Some are priced higher than others due to Brand.

My old 2007 Octavia VRs Estate was an excellent car and to me finished of well.

I bought it second hand from Skoda and had it for around 7 years or so.

I also own a 2007 MB. So in theory I can compare the quality. 

 

Paint seems to be the same but no stone protection on the MB.

Dash finish on the MB is cheap rubberized paint that scratches off.

Internal door handles on the Octavia had a nice rubber backing and felt and looked better.

No discernable difference in dash fit.

The leather is better in the MB but the seats are comfier in the Skoda, no lumber in th MB.

Sat Nav is a joke in the MB but the HK sound is excellent. 

Skoda 2.0 Diesel was better and smoother with a remap. Eats miles.

MB 5.5 Petrol is a monster. Drinks petrol.

MB around £35,000 more than the Skoda.

OK, not like for like but you get my point...

 

Oh, and the inside of the rear discs on the MB rust like bugger and is common. Also the mild steel shields are as cheap on both cars. To replace the discs on the MB..... over £2000. I have replaced the fronts on the cheap at around £800.

@vfrvrs MB from those years are not renowned for quality because of Chrysler anyway. But sounds like you had an AMG which is awesome.

Really that was a few years earlier around 2000 - 2004 when things would fall off and cars rusted. I still have an AMG, weekend car.
