Ok so I thought that in best boy scout tradition I'd "be prepared".  I'd bought a small kit of assorted bulbs and fuses some years ago and as well as bulbs some blade fuses were included.  Well it occurred to me that I'd no idea what fuses were actually used in the car so tonight I pried off the cover of the fuse box at the side of the dash and snapped a photo of the residents on my phone. I then came in and dug out the handbook to see what was what.

 

Question 1:  I was a bit confused when looking at the diagram in the handbook and the full and empty fuse positions as it made no sense.  Eventually I came to the conclusion that either the diagram in the book was put in upside down or the fusebox in the car was!  Is this correct?

 

Question 2:  Assuming I'm right about 1) it appears that both the front cigarette lighter socket, and also the one in the boot, have 20A fuses for each but the handbook says max rating 10A per socket...  Does anyone know why?  Is it that the actual sockets can't handle more than 10A, or the wiring diameter is too thin?  Do the official wiring diags give any indication of wire thickness?

 

Question 3:  On the dashboard of my car are stop start and asr buttons but no hill descent button.  Would it be possible to remap one of the buttons I don't use  to act as a Hill Descent Control button?

1. Very common for cabin fuseboxes to be differently fitted in left or right hand drive vehicles. Owners manual often shows only the LHD orientation.

2. Official diagrams show wiring to be 1,5mm sq. from fuse, and for earth. 20A fuses is probably what they consider a safe rating for this wire thickness.  Why the manual says what it does?, don't know.

3. Dunno, but sounds unlikely.

I got this from the internet. If you zoom in on your fuses you will see the same numbers written on the empty fuse positions.

Thanks guys, well from a quick google 20A is about the max current limit for 1.5mm cable.  Perhaps the manual says 10A so nobody sticks a 20A kettle or heater into the socket and pushes the wiring right to the limit all the time?

 

I was hoping the ASR button could be remapped in software, like keys on a keyboard, so I could have HDC.  Never used the ASR button, and I think the HDC button would be more useful in a bad winter as I've got a couple of very steep hills to go down which aren't always well ploughed/gritted.  I read somewhere where someone bought a spare HDC button and wired it in themselves to the ECU but that looked like way too much work for someone of my skill level.

This shows the fuses in the correct orientation.
I have this printed on A4 and folded in the fuse box.

Unfortunately mine doesn't, L&K has mandatory sunroof which I didn't want (In Scottish dealers brochures it's called the open air swimming pool option :biggrin:)  The next best deal available when I was looking to buy was the fantastically low miles SE (>7k on a >3yo car).  It looked like it had just rolled off the line apart from one small scratch in the plastic on a door card.

Yes that is correct. Turn the diagram upside down for the correct orientation.

Because they know people put the wrong things in the sockets?

No. The Hill Descent Control is only part of the Off Road Button system and although it might be technically possible to change the specification of the car it is a lot more than just a wiring/reprogramming change. It also needs the brake hydraulic master control system changing.

Not all 4x4 Yetis came equipped with the Off Road Button. For most it was an additional cost extra.

Agreed - my 2014 140 BHP 4x40did not have the off road button fitted as standard.

Neither did our first Yeti, a 140 4x4.
