Gmail - can't delete messages

Featured Replies

Having a problem on both tablet and phone in that I can't delete 100s of messages in Gmail linked accounts

The accounts in use have been cleared out already on my PC but Androids Gmail doesn't recognise that all this old stuff has gone from the host accounts and also doesn't appear to have any way to batch delete old messages.

Any ideas?

Is gmail looking at your old accounts via IMAP or POP3?

Do you need to do an online sync from your PC account?

I have forced a sync on the phone and tablet but no joy. I have uninstalled the accounts, cleared cache and reinstalled accounts in Gmail, all the old messages re appear.

IMAP I think

IMAP means your email client (gmail) is working directly onto the mailbox for your email provider, so any changes you make via the client will be directly to the mailbox contents.  POP3 either collects a copy of the mailbox to your mail client or can be set up to make simultaneous changes to the mailbox in step with your mail client's database, the point being that two copies of your emails can exist in different places which could have led to the sort of problems you are experiencing.

If you are definitely using IMAP it looks like you have a corruption problem in your gmail database so I'd be looking towards Google's tech help fora for some inspiration.
