Yeti Coolant Loss

Featured Replies

I have a 2013 Yeti 1.6 tdi Greenline with 72k miles, owned from new. Great family utility vehicle and really frugal on diesel.

Over the last year the coolant level in the expansion tank has gone down slightly but this has accelerated quickly in the last week such that I can see coolant drips from under the engine now. I've taken off the cover under the engine bay and can see coolant dripping from the bottom crankshaft pulley when the engine is running. Difficult to see where it's coming from but I'm guessing the water pump spindle seal. Whilst I do my own servicing normally I don't have the time to fix this so I've booked into a local dealer to have the cam belt and water pump replaced (£499 fixed cost). Cam belt is up for renewal anyway so makes sense to get them both done together. Currently not driving the car as the leak is too severe.

Anyway my question is that I want to make sure there is adequate coolant in the system (not just the expansion tank) for the 5 mile drive to the dealers. In previous cars there's has always been a screwed plug in the top header of the radiator to facilitate checking and filling directly into the system. Blowed if I can find anywhere on the Yeti to do this, short of removing one of the upper coolant hoses and pouring coolant in the end. Have had a search online but can't see anything useful to identify a system filling point.

Would appreciate any thoughts from those who have, for example, changed the coolant on a Yeti - where do you fill coolant into the system, in addition to the expansion tank?

Thanks.

You don’t, it all goes into the expansion tank.

As Ken says, you fill the system via the expansion tank only.

And as yours is a 2013 car the cam belt should have been changed last year; the recommended period is 5 years. It used to be 4 but they changed it around 2012.

Ok, thanks, the expansion tank it is then.
