Gearbox Oil Sealed For Life? Aye, Right!

Featured Replies

Just had the gearbox oil changed on my 104,00 mile vehicle, yesterday and it has made an immediate improvement to the gearchange; less balking and changes are smoother.  Basically feels far better than it has in a long time, and that's with the temperatures hovering in the low C's around here.

I have tried on several occasions in the past to get it changed and the dealerships have refused on the grounds the system is sealed for life.

Now, if only I could get them to clean or replace the filter in my Haldex unit!

That's good to know, mines on 140'000 and starting to feel notchy. I'll not bother asking skoda.

Skoda were happy to do mine when I asked but they'd never done one and weren't sure on the cost so I skipped it.

Good to know it helps as I've got everything sat in the garage ready to do it myself.

Change your dealer.  Mine was done 2 years ago and the dealer knows it should be changed, they even wrote down the number of miles left until the next change.

Just to point out @Macapun0, you have a DSG, 6 speed, wet clutch, auto box. That does requires a service 40,000mile/4 year oil change.

Fin69, on the other hand, has a manual gearbox with no oil change requirement and most owners never need or do change the oil in these. But if people feels they want to, thats fine, and it can remove syncro wear particles and extend life in boxes that have been subject to abuse or done high mileage.

The gearbox oil change was carried out at my local Skoda dealer at the same time as their own non SUK Major Service for a total of £290. The oil change was around £100.

Do mine every 50,000 or sooner on all my vehicles.

Astravan in particular has a gearbox made of cheese. Sold it with 105,000 miles and no probs with gearbox (used Fuchs Sintofluid for the 3 changes).

I did 325000 miles in my MK1 Octavia without ever changing the transmission oil including lots of towing overlarge and seriously overloaded trailers, the synchros, bearings and gearchange was fine right till the end.

I do recall a couple of trips with a seriously overloaded van trailer probably about 2 tonne going up some steep alpine roads at full throttle in the lower gears starting to hear some transmission noise and thinking that I had pushed things too far but it got better when cooled and was no different afterwards in normal driving.

I will however be changing the oil on my current Octavia, it certainly can only do good.
