Winter tyres

Featured Replies

I had my car tyres changed all round the other week, Michelin CrossClimate pluses.

I was faffing with the car controls as I usually do when waiting for my daughter to come out of school

I noticed during this faffing that the car thinks it’s wearing winter tyres

i have no idea how or why

how do I sort this little mess out?

surely this is going to affect my mpg?

or is it to do with tyre pressures?

No, its when you set the maximum speed setting, it assumes you are on winter tyres as some brands of winter tyre have a lower speed rating than summer tyres. So if you've fiddled and set a warning to nag you if you go over 90, I mean 80, I mean 70, then it will show "winter tyres" in your car settings.

Which is stupid as you might just want a warning for speeding rather than tyre safety. Anyway, turn it off and it will go away and you'll be back on summer tyres again :)

I think I might just have set that whilst faffing, I’ll refaff it tomorrow

many thanks

BTW, "Winter Tyres" on the infotainment car settings screen is a heading, under which the speed setting is. So even if you untick the speed setting (and remove the error message about going too fast on winter tyres in your maxidot display) it won't remove the Winter Tyres heading from the tyres menu. That will always be there, but is just a heading, it doesn't mean it thinks its on winter tyres. If that makes sense. I know what I meant anyway...  :)

the warning is there for the Germans. Derestricted Autobahn, cars which can go relatively fast and tyres which are rated lower --> must have a warning, either a sticker or electronic. It's just a warning, most of the time for you guys it's not relevant. My current winters are rated for 160km/h only...  H vs V vs Y makes a difference when you're allowed to drive quickly.

I wish we were allowed to drive quickly! I must visit Germany one day, just to experience the derestricted Autobahns :)

Just hope a Trabant doesn't pull out in front of you!!!

Just after German reunification I use to visit Hannover monthly, and still remember how scary it is when you're doing 150mph and a Trabant pulls out in front of you doing 30mph - fortunately for all concerned the brakes on the Audi hire car I usually got were excellent

Or going flat out in your Mondeo estate (indicated 120mph) and those two dots of light that were a mile behind you a second ago are now on a Porsche 911 that would politely like you to get out of it's way  :D

More recently it’s a Dutchman with a caravan doing exactly 110kmph

Right I’ve tried turning everything off and it’s still displaying winter tyres

am I doing anything wrong here?

I’ve got the car booked in (again) Tuesday for this

Have you ready the relevant bit in the Owners Manual?

If you set it so you can reset it.  Did you set a speed?

I didn’t set a speed prior no, I also unticked speed warnings

I take it not a nice simple menu like with Maxidot.

*Speed Warnings.*  Is different.

It is Winter Tyres, then you set a speed with that.   I use that to give 2 different speed warning at different speeds.

Someone familiar with the set up you have will be along hopefully.

Winter Tyres is a heading, under which you can set a winter speed. It doesn't mean you are on winter tyres. You can't remove a heading.

By the way, how are you finding the Crossclimates and what size are you running?

So why did it used to say summer tyres if it’s a heading?

The CCs are great!

As I had all four changed at once I Feel well stuck into the road, (but not as a if the pressures are too low iykwim), apart from on loose surfaces, but then what would?

The tyre garage said even though I was going for four tyres anyway that you’d only notice any difference if running from all four.

Definitely 100% would buy again

Running 16’s (205/55)

What kind of loose surfaces are you driving? Are you on gravel rally stages or farm tracks?

Crossclimates are just summer biased all-season tyres. They've been around for years, the only difference being Michelins marketing budget.

Tyre manfacturers can tweak the compounds and tread patterns all they like. Give them a fancy name, pay for a huge marketing campaign and charge the earth. Happy shareholders.

Well if it used to say Summer Tyres then I've no idea. I've never seen Summer Tyres on mine. Page 65-66 on the Infotainment instructions only mention a Winter Tyres menu, under which there is a speed warning. There is no mention of a Summer Tyres menu nor any mention of hiding the Winter Tyres menu.

Oh, my apologies :blush  I really could’ve sworn it said summer tyres previously though?

I got to say the Michelin CCs are much better than the Coopers (zx?)and especially the Falkens (Zion?)I’ve had in the past, these two others were bought for all four wheels as well

I've never seen a bad review of Michelin tyres, they seem to get it right a lot of the time, but then you do tend to pay a premium for them.

I've never quite been able to justify them over other 'premium' brands though. One day!

Michelin cross climates on my Superb II have been fantastic. They are much quieter than the original Continentals that were fitted and they stick to the road well - being especially good in wet or cold conditions but they were also good when driving through France in the rather hot weather last year.

On my previous Superb I had Michelin energy tyres for a while but these were awful in the winter.
