Have you checked that the two-way connector is securely plugged into the back of the alt?

How did you check that there were no breaks in the wire?

Do you have a multimeter?

Did you check both sides of the plug/socket connection at the gearbox bracket? The part going off away from the alternator towards the nearside of the car is just as likely to have breaks as the other side. The wire colour of the DFM wire changes to purple/green on the side of the connection that I mean.

May be worth acquiring a super-cheap meter for a fiver or so, then you can unplug the connector at the alternator and measure what volts you have on each pin there with ignition on.

If either pin has no volts relative to chassis/batt negative, that wire is broken.

Ask them to check continuity between pin 2 of the alternator connector and pin 38 of the 81-way engine ECU connector.  Whereabouts are you located?

Im in grimsby

Other than Wino's thoughts (all reasonable) I'd also think about the strip fuses over the battery being cracked.
