Superb rear spring replacement

Featured Replies

Has anyone changed there rear springs? Is it an easy job? Did you use widow makers or is it just a case of dropping the rear suspension arm and popping the new spring in?

Thanks

I had a rear spring snap. Searched online for hint and tips, priced up a replacement spring and checked the weather forecast.

Local garage quoted just under £150 for the rear pair (I'm on the understanding it makes more sense to replace in pairs), I stayed warm, dry and bloodied-fingered free :D

I find these Autodoc YouTube videos really useful, it's a VW Golf Mk5 but the principle is largely the same...

Another issue I've had working on the suspension from home is the ability to get enough height. I can never really get the car high enough off the ground to work safely and easily with a trolley jack and axle stands. It needs a proper lift really.

Golf mk 5 is basically the same as the Superb: Golf 5 is PQ35, which was adapted as PQ46 for the B6 Passat, which the Superb is based on.

As for getting enough height, it depends on your jack. I have a McAnax 3-tonne one which can jack up to around 50 cm which I've found more than enough for anything I'm willing to take on on the driveway.

Height is an issue doing them on the ground with the lower arm having to be pushed down quite far (You will see what I mean in the video)
Used my mates 2 post lift the next time and super easy as you can get to everything

pay the money and get a local independent to do it.
