Exhaust noise?

Featured Replies

It's done it since ive owned it (coming up to 3 years), but ive not noticed any other cars doing it.

Basically when i pull away, sometimes the exhaust note changes for a moment and it's quite loud compared to its normal tone. It's almost as if momentarily something was bypassing the silencer, very low loud noise, seems to mostly happen between 1k to 1.4k rpm, and more often when cold.

anyone else get this?

anyone know what it is?

I've not really noticed this, but logically the turbo, or at least its output will be getting maybe 100% directed into the inlet tract during initial "moving off".

It sounds almost as if it's dumping the exhaust straight out the back of the engine. Wastegate? Blow-off valve?

I'd think that it is the path being taken that is changing and a change in noise. There is no blow-off valve to atmosphere I think, only a electrically controlled wastegate - where the "not required" charged air goes I have not looked into.

By blow-off valve, i probably mean bypass valve, so the exhaust gas completely bypasses the turbo. As for the wastegate, i don't think it's that, as i have only heard it when deliberately flooring it in 2nd gear then throttle off suddenly with the windows down, it's just a little momentary hush/hiss noise, completely different noise from this weird open-exhaust kind of noise.

It also seems to come along with an increased vibration/resonance in the cabin.

Hmm interesting, I purchased a 3 year old Fabia 1.2 TSI 110 a month or so back and I've noticed something similar. I was just coming on here to ask about it and saw this. I've been driving an old fiesta for about 9 years, so this TSI feels and sounds a lot different.

Not sure if its the same thing, as I can recreate it at will just by pulling away on an incline or giving it a few more rev's when pulling away from stationary. I can also hear it (albeit a little quieter) if say I accelerate hard from about 1k RPM in any gear up to about 1.5k... not that I do that often :o

Does it sound anything like this?

Or from inside the cabin (when it drops to about 1.5k):

Apologies if its not the same. not sure if this is just normal exhaust/engine noise for these TSI's or not?

For me its quite similar, it seems to happen when its doing the anti stall thing to 1800 rpm and pulling away drops the rpm.

Ill try record mine next time it does it (if it lets me lol)

occasionally itll also make it while im already fully in gear in 1st or 2nd when ive been rolling in traffic at 5-10mph, but only rarely.

Mines more pronounced, have a look on youtube for exhaust cutouts, it sounds like somebody opened it for a second as i pulled away. My dad commented on it once saying it sounded like i had a hole in the exhaust lol

I've noticed this on mine when I pull away in first gear, sounds exactly like you are explaining it.

  • 5 years later...

Hello,

Apologies to dig up an old thread, not sure if the users are still active but I have been searching for answers for this noise also, I actually have a 2014 1.2 Polo TSI and this thread is the only place I have found that sounds similar to mine.

Not sure if there was a fix found for this or maybe it is just a normal noise for this TSI model but on my car it is very loud... someone has also commented to say it sounds like I have an issue with my exhaust.

Please see video of the recording I made, you can hear it around 4/5 seconds in and once I shift to 2nd gear you can hear it a bit quieter around 9/10 seconds in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, welcome.

Others make have different answers but I can't hear any (unusual or loud) noises in any of the videos on this thread including yours Chris.  My wife's 20151.2 TSI (90) Fabia makes various noises from the engine bay at various times I just expect it's the computer programs doing their stuff.  A second warm start of the day after the car has been sitting for an hour or two will give the high revs at idle to warm the emissions' stuff.

We sometimes get a loud vibration rattle off I think something that sounds like an exhaust shield but as I've a couple of times checked nothing is loose (when checking at least) and the noise is only very occasionally and for a very short time, I don't worry about it.  The mystery underside clonk this model gets is regular and annoys me but again I just (very begrudgingly) accept it as German engineering 'quality' of the 21st century.

You might have only done it for the video but I would never start the engine and immediately pull off, things might still be settling from the engine starting.  My routine is to turn the ignition on and check all the dash lights that should come on and then go out, whilst doing this I put my seatbelt on and then start the engine, checking the dash and other lights and instruments by quick glances and listen to the engine and car for anything unusual (all distractions like radio, phone are always tuned off before I turn the engine off previous use of the car).  All this only takes a few seconds  and all becomes habit like checking the mirrors and looking over your shoulder before pulling off.

faulty exhaust actuator? if you can get underneath and squirt a bit of lithium grease on the center pin . If it gets corrosion or dirt on the pin it can give intermittent problem like strange noises on gear change
