Side fans of ventilator don't really blow

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I have a problem with my blower inside my car.

The two blowers in the mid console work just fine. On every speed.

However, the black side blowers under the front windows only blow very slowly. I asume they must be able to blow as strong as the mid console ones.

What could be the problem? Could is be a broken resistent or something else?

1.3 1999 Felicia.

@2Chainz - I can't help much, but I honestly think the issue must be with the side vents, because there is only one blower fan. Are you certain that the side vent volume controls work correctly?

Air path is shorter to the middle ones than the outer ones, so will flow more for a given duct cross-section. Partially block the middle ones and the outer ones will improve.

Your assumption is wrong. The air flow from the blower is not infinite. Skoda designed the geometry of the air ducts mainly to help defogging the windscreen with hot air during autumn/winter or to blow cold air inside from the middle vents during summer. Therefore from the fluid mechanics point of view the central vents act as a high pressure loss, hence the air flow through side vents will be lower.

They do not blow as strong that's a fact. Though I doubt it was a design decision by skoda, rather something that just happened to be this way.

You would be surprised how many decisions and tests have to be made in the process of designing a car that should sell successfully. In my opinion Skoda Felicia is not a car that "happen to be this way". Was it a known technical compromise? For sure! But not a design slip. Otherwise it would had been corrected in MK2 version. You can call a lack of design the inevitable excessive corrosion of rear wheel arches and tailgate. Or the hydraulic headlights adjustment.

I mean I love felicia and you know it. One of the reasons I do is this poor design gives the car character. BTW I ve never seen any of my felicias rust.

Hey guys.

Thanks for the info. It's been appreciated. Lots of good knowledge and feedback here.

And you guys were right indeed. When i turned off the mid console vents then the side vents started to run properly.

The vents for your feet also worked fine by me.

Actually, it was corrected in MK2. But only in variant with AC. There was extra wall in air ducts, which divided window and side vents airstream. Window duct now had its own flap, while top distributor flap was removed, so center and side vent ducts were now constantly open. With center vent closed, you could direct all air through side vents, which is not possible in non-AC variant.

Back to topic - Felicia ducts and distribution flaps are indeed poorly designed. Air inlet is between windscreen vent and center vent. Stream between windscreen and center vent is managed only by rotating top distributor flap, so windscreen outlet is never really closed. And side vents share airducts with windscreen, but most of air escapes through windscreen vents in centre of console. That's reason why side vents are almost useless.

I don't get Why skoda didn't use improved ducting from AC variant in all Felicia. They could atleast use some deflector, which would redirect direct air to the sides, also helping to distribute air over whole windscreen evenly, instead of letting it escape right onto center of windscreen.

Because not everyone should enjoy this luxury of having proper airflow.
Only the ones who pay.
