Clutch travel 1.4tdi

Featured Replies

2009 Fabia 1.4tdi Estate

Possibe clutch issue. I'm not familiar with Skoda's and have had mine for just 3 weeks. So what I would like to know is how much clutch travel should I expect? At present the clutch only needs to be depressed a couple of inches, could this be because it's worn out or is the clutch self adjusting? Any help appreciated, thanks chaps.

Anyone?

You should always fully depress anyway but its more the biting point that is the issue.

The bite should sit around half way along the pedal travel so if yours is coming up high, it may be getting long in the tooth!

If you are only having an issue with travel, don't worry too much. Try this test though.

Get the car on a nice uphill run, pop it in to a higher gear then you would usually use and hit the gas pedal...

If you experience slippage, the clutch is on its way out. It will need replacing at some point so start to price one up as they vary greatly from outlet to outlet and also, some will have two year warranty, others just the one.  (They can fail within that time)!

You may also need to have the dual mass flywheel changed as they can be worn and a worn flywheel will kill the new clutch! That said, that will greatly inflate the price so its a false economy to swap out a good one!  Trust the mechanic and if they say it appears worn, take a look whilst it is still fitted as a charlatan will most likely have an old flywheel from a VW branded vehicle, hanging around somewhere, in order to make a few quid!

They might show you the old one, saying it was yours or put a new one on and still show you a crappy one so they replace one that was fine.

I am being pessimistic here but strangely, the fitters who quoted me the most for the actual clutch, previously, are the ones who go on to mention the flywheel. I had a clutch fitted from Mr Clutch, around 3 years ago and he mentioned nothing and did not feel the need to change the flywheel.

He was also the best price and a two year warranty.

Still worried? Go to Skoda but it will cost more.

1.4 TDI doesn't have a dmf.

I can't quote on that but mine is a Greenline, 1.4 diesel. That does, according to clutch replacement specialists.

The 1.6 TDI is a solid mass flywheel as well and mine is the same doesn't have much travel for engaging and disengaging.

Thanks for the info guys. All working fine it's just I've never had a car where so little movement is required to disengage the clutch.

...You an old Peugeot owner, then?
