Tyres and oil leaks Karoq 1.5 petrol.

Featured Replies

Hi All.

Two things. My car is 7months and completed 20,000. After the first week from new, it developed and an oil leak on top of the rocker cover. This is not normally seen by people as they do not need to take this cover off. I went back to the dealership and they said it's just oil mist. I said yes its a leak. The oil from coming from the rubber seal that is under the actuating device for the deactivation of the two cylinders mode. They told me to leave for a few weeks to see what happened and sure enough, there was enough oil sitting on top of the rocker cover to say this is leaking oil.

It was only a rubber seal but at that time Skoda did not make a replacement seal and the waiting time was 3 months. After a lot of talking and raised voices and keep going back pestering them they put on a complete new actuating device as they could get that but not the seal.

Well, last week I took the cover of and the same seal is leaking again so back to Skoda. So my point is everyone takes this cover off and see if your seals are leaking. All you do is hold both ends and pull the cover just comes off.

Tyres.

I had to have a new tyre as a 53 seater coach decide to take the side out of my car at a roundabout. So I went to a tyre company and ask how much for a new tyre. This started and discussion on what load the car was carrying and what it was being used for. I said stop I just want a tyre of the same that is on the car. (Bridgstone 215/55/17).

The guy came out to look at the tyre and said this was a standard load carrying rating but then noticed that the speed rating was far higher than he thought it should be. He looked at the rest of the tyre and found the letters AO. He then went OH.

We went back to the reception and he looked again at the specs and said this tyre was commissioned by VW group for VW group vehicles of all types hence the speed rating being far higher than was needed for my car.

I said fine this is going to cost he said yes £180 each fitted. I asked another tyre place and they agreed with the first guy. The tyres on VW group cars are mostly been specifically designed for these cars at VW request.

Interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi any chance of a photo of what cover you are suggesting to take off?

It’s the black plastic cover that you first see when you lift the bonnet I think it may have the letters TSI on it. It’s right on top of engine about 18”x12”.

I will I’ll try to post pic later when I have 5 mins

The oil filler and dip stock run through it

Oil leaks tend to be associated with crankcase pressure not being suitably controlled/reduced. Try loosening the oil filler cap while the engine is running and see whether it gets pulled back down under suction, blown upwards by pressure, or neutral. It should tend towards the first of those if the PCV system is working well.

If the crankcase is at slightly below atmospheric pressure, oil seals have a much easier time of it.

Edit: don't be surprised or alarmed if/when the engine 'stutters' a bit or threatens to cut out when loosening the oil cap, you only need to just disengage the cap for a second to feel which way any forces on it are acting, then screw it back down.

Further edit: I guess it's possible that the seal in question is dealing with high pressure pumped oil, as opposed to just crankcase pressure, in which case ignore the above.

Thanks will see if I can check mine when I have a chance, when parked off the main road..

AO stands for Audi OE, they are evidentally from the same supplier that supplies for an Audi build line as Original Equipment Manufacturer.

You can safely ignore this mark and fit standard tyres provided the speed rating is sufficient for your usage and/or top speed.

H rating (130mph) should be sufficient if you drive solely in the UK!

Look here for what you should be paying you can get a Bridgestone AO tyre for under £80 delivered plus £10-15 fitting.

But many others to choose from, you don't need AO.
